I understand your point of view, but it depends entirely on what line of work you are in before you make broad based claims that 'working from home is not a real job'. You simply do what you have done now, you make a dedicated work space and use self discipline. I don't currently work at home, but i have, and long before the wu-flu madness. It involved 12 hr shifts of remote operations of critical infrastrusture.... as a professional you remain focused, otherwise things go wrong. The question should be what constitutes a 'real job' not where you do it.

idk I save a ton of money on gas working from home. Plus if you have an office at home that's dedicated just to work, then you can write off part of your power and internet bills. I get it though, the distractions are real. I have to come up with tricks to get in the headspace to get work done, like turning on certain music that I associate with work. I used to think I'd have more free time because there is no drive and traffic every day, but I just end up working longer hours due to taking longer breaks and getting distracted.

I'm glad this works for you. I think if I could find a nice affordable office near my home, I might do the same as you just to have a more clear separation, but I wouldn't go as far as saying working from home is not a -real- job. I've worked from home as a consultant(when not traveling) for almost 15 years and while you do get distractions depending on your situation, I find that I actually work more than when I was in an office. It's not for everyone but it's definately a real job. :-)

Hi DT! You might consider the option to not have a computer at home at all... Think about it. It might be a good idea to do something else at home instead of what you are doing at work. Try it before you buy a new computer. The change in the type of activity is better for the cognitive function of the human brain. Try it.

Did exactly the same thing this week. I-m diagnosed ADHD so being at home where I do all my hobbies is just a massive distraction for me, let alone managing 4 computers and sleeping, working and eating in my room because I live in a house share. It-s definitely been good for productivity for me.

More like working without work area sucks, and setting it up at home is much harder than people think. And laptop with fruit logo and kitchen table will work only for hipster to take pictures for social media how he is 'working' from home.

I went down to Lafayette, LA last week for work and wow it was hot and humid. I live in Mississippi, so I'm used to humidity, but that was way too much for me. It felt like I was standing in soup.

Wouldn't it be cheaper & more convenient to have made a new room in your house similar to this one? You could have hired a company to build it on. It would have increased the property value too.
