That second advice can be harmful. It's almost like an advice to seek out echo chambers, and in this niche of the internet. that might radicalise you into -radically paranoid-! The fact is that unless you run out into the depth of some deep forest, and stay there, you'll have your privacy infringed on. You can throw out all your electronics, and still be tracked through the electronics of others.
The only reasonable thing to do is to actively try to influence politicians, and the society, through media and social media. There could be laws that limit the freedom of the social media companies. Laws that limits what info they can collect, how long they can keep it, what they can sell etc. In the EU we've got GDPR, and other laws are of course possible as well.

I ask myself increasingly often where I will have to draw the line and continue to live my life offline. I don't know yet, but when the line is reached, I know that I will recognize it. Other than that, I'm reasonably well off knowledge-wise, meaning I use only Linux since 15 years, and none of my phones has any spyware that can be prevented (meaning de-Googled custom ROMs or alternate operating systems alltogether. No -smart- devices, nothing listening in on my conversations. Although I did have the situation when I thought -now friends are untrustworthy, not because they personally are not to be trusted, but because the devices they carry with them are not to be trusted-.

imo, a good way to judge how well you-re doing in protecting yourself is seeing how much you-re on par with whistleblowers on the run like snowden. If one of the most wanted men by the US is fine with using a smartphone, posting to twitter every now and interacting with most of the general denizens of the internet, then there-s no reason why that random guy on Reddit who says everyone is spying on you, no one can be trusted and you need to delete everything should be taken at face value. The internet is an amazing thing and we have no idea how long this will last so enjoy it and your life with it and just be aware of how you can protect yourself

Really enjoyed this video! I have been getting a lot more clarity as I take the 10, 000 ft. view on my threat model. Yes, privacy is important to me, but just because it is possible to have an extreme threat model doesn-t mean I need that personally. Honestly, yeah, I-m probably going to continue using a MacBook and iPhone, but I just try to find ways to use them as wisely as I can, and just because I use the device does not equate to me trusting them with everything- simply put, I don-t keep every important thing on those devices.
I-m just a guy with a fairly low threat model who loves watching Techlore content.
Peace.

A different video but hey, most welcomed. Maybe you, The Hated One, Rob could do more vids on the mental side of things and to mitigate the anxiety of the way the world is going. You teach us the ways of privacy, data breeches, evil meta corporations, evil players, how to protect ourselves and the likes but not how to bring inner peace in our new ways to protect ourselves and let-s face it, change is difficult. Maybe you could start a series on the mental side of things and what works for you and how we could find what works for us. Food for thought.

talking about privacy has shown me how fake some people are in two aspects.
1. the -educate yourself, it's so easy- type people in their own bubbles who never shut up about politics but when shown how terrible the social media platforms they use are they refuse to change because it's not easy for them.
2. if people are only willing to talk to you through social media, where they can look however self-righteous they'd like with their posts and comments, they don't actually give a shit about you.

Sometimes i feel like digital privacy doesnt worth these extra 1000 steps, but then i realise that im kind of resistant to these digital attacks and its easier that i dont have the hassle to set up another bank account or something like that bc i know that you could be phished through ur emails just feels good, especially now when life revolves around the digital space but you already know a lot about it and ur not blind when you are in it

Well said sir. As someone who born in the 60's and seeing the birth of the computer age in the 80's. While it was fun to escape to the digital world, when you felt alone and isolated in the real world, it truly isn't healthy to let it control your life. We need a shift to a balanced, mindset, life style, seek peace, understanding, knowledge and wisdom.

Beautiful message! :)
I must say, from the first video I saw here, I thought - hey, finally someone who thinks like I do. This video confirms it, as well as my evolution in this digital world. I have rejected extreme opinions, closed a lot of social media accounts and- here I am.
Keep up the good work, unknown friends. Cya

I miss having a large platform to share images on, upload photography, and keep up with nearby events. I deleted nearly all my social media in 2016 because of the censorship, privacy issues, biased trending topics, and time wasted scrolling. So I'm relieved somewhat, but also feel left out.
