Tor vs VPN - which one should you trust more? [podcast debate] - The Hated One Tor vs VPN - which one should you trust more? [podcast debate] - The Hated One Mack: As someone who in the past has run tor relays I can tell you there is zero mitigation against port scanning, what-s more there should be and isn-t a decentralised hash table or anything close to it to remove -bad actors- who aren-t just doing large scale attacks. I submitted my findings after running it for the best part of a year as a security study and they didn-t respond. It seems odd don-t you think?

Here is a very simple way to determine how anonymous you are. Go to whatismyip while connected to tor. Now do it with a VPN. Now do it with both. What does it reveal? It reveals you are connected to tor AND a VPN. With a google search, you can identify that specific vpn. Dont trust VPNs. Tor all the way.

Hello, I'm in China and can have one time access to a window computer who has a VPN so I can download any file that might be needed. My computer is running ubuntu LTS. I have tor file on my Ubuntu computer but can't seem to install it. Please help

Maybe I missed it - but why not use both? Especially with a VPN that will onion-ize and obscure the servers (I'm thinking - ones that allow you to hop the great firewall of China) while using a TOR based browser?

VPNs -> will give your data to goverments.
Tor + bridges -> safer than vpn and there is nobody who can give away your data.
For doing something illegal: tor
Just so people don't know it's you: vpn

If you want to torrent, TOR is not a choice, they state it clearly on their site. If you want to torrent you need a good VPN. Plus, be careful even with a VPN, nothing on the internet is 100% secure.
