I'm still very confused u never mentioned if u have to use one USB drive or two to do this whole process. Everyone I've researched about this says u need 2 drives I don't know what for tho they explain it terribly. Meaning u can't just use one drive because the software that u are currently in at that select screen is taking space from this first drive. So then wouldn't u need a second drive to be put in to actually install the thing to it. the best way to explain what I mean I guess would be to say -its as if u are using windows right now and the thing u want to do needs to still use things on that drive with Windows on it.
Meaning u have to get a separate drive to install this new thing on it. Since the windows drive has to be running to install the new thing. I hope u understand this mess of words meant.

So with this whole thing of building your own PC to then run your server of HDD's. How do I get enough sata ports for example the old PC I'm gonna use only has one sata port. Will I need to use a raid controller with a SAS connector to which I can then connect a cable that has 5-6 sata cables terminating to one SAS connector. Can I just do this. Since this raid card will be going into the PCI slot wouldn't that be a way to get around having no reg sata ports to plug drives into??
Thanks a bunch mate.

Curious Chris, the installer says it favors flash media but what good is using flash media when FreeNAS seemingly is not tuned to run from it? (in time FreeNAS wears out and destroys your usb stick ) read that a lot of people are switching to old SSD instead of using USB sticks

Chris you are a life saver! You are the only one who mentioned to use a different drive for data other than boot to be able to use it. Thank you sooo much. I hope one day i can repay you.

Chris, you have to revisit your FreeNAS series. Lots of people are interested in building home NAS machines but the software learning curve is steep.
