I think to decrease saturation in 'hue&saturation' is not better than to decrease saturation by creating 50% grey layer and change the blend mode of it to color. I think that represents the brightness better which human eyes see. So here is my suggestion. Make a Hue&saturation adjustment layer and change the blend mode to soft light. On the top of it make a grey layer and change the blend mode to color. Then create horizontal curve layer above it.

The moment when you talked about a grey layer who can be a light map reminded me the (high pass ) filter.
a filter that gives you an grey picture that (by bein put in softlight mode for exemple) can improve sharpness and/or pump up the relief of an image, may be there is some good material to talk about on this.

A little disappointed that you didnt say that anything in this vid was as easy as a pie! . Seriously though, who are the weirdos who disliked this video? This, like all your vids, was so clear, so helpful and helps to build a solid understanding of what photoshop does and why. Thanks Umesh!

Ok, I'm having a blonde moment. what do you mean it doesn't change the colors? Curves doesn't change the color, only light and dark. what is going over my head here? I fail to see the benefit of horizontal verses S curve. It's just more natural looking? Hmm.

Thank you for this tutorial! I found out if you use 'Luminosity' blending mode instead of 'Soft light', you won't need to make curves horizontal. Also Black & White filter has a better result, comparing with hue=0 in HSL

This sort of emulates the luma vs luma curve of color grading softwares. Is there a way to replicate all the other horizontal curves in photoshop? (hue vs luma, hue vs sat, hue vs hue etc)

Cant this be done with the usual curves adjustment? Doesnt this just make it a bit easier for someone who cant conceptualize the diagonal curve? Am I missing something?

There's a MUCH easier way of doing this. Just use regular curves and set the blending mode of the curve to luminosity. Thank me later; )
