t require the set up that a DEXA scan would. The tradeoff in accuracy is not that high, given that as you become more skilled in pinching-your accuracy could be within 1-3% of the exact number. If you would rather use a more economical method for testing your body fat level at home however, you can easily do that as well. When you realize just what calipers are testing it becomes very easy to see how you can do this with a simple fifty cent tape measure. Calipers are literally measuring the thickness of the skin fold that you pinch when doing your body fat measurements. If you can (easier when you enlist the help of someone else) simply pinch in the locations shown in this video and use a standard tape measure to mark out the thickness of the fold. Average out the results performed on your chest, abdomen and thigh and determine your body fat with this chart: Ellington Darden: 1/4 inch pinch is 5 to 8 percent body fat 1/2 inch pinch is 9 to 13 percent body fat 3/4 inch pinch is 14 to 18 percent body fat 1 inch pinch is 19 to 22 percent body fat 1 1/2 inch pinch is 23 to 27 percent body fat 2 inch pinch is 28 to 32 percent body fat 2 1/2 inch pinch is 33 percent body fat and up Alternatively, if you get your skin fold measurements either with a caliper or with the old fashioned tape measure method you can input them at to determine your current level of body fat. I-m a 16 year old boy with 14% body fat. I lost a lot of weight recently but I-m still not where I would like to be. I just measured my body fat percentage and it ended up being 14% which surprised me, because I looked up pictures and I don-t look like I-m 14% body fat but instead look more like I-m around 20%. My theory is maybe I just have some extra fat because of puberty but I do not look like I-m 14% at all. Does anybody know why this is?
reply

It is plausible that Jeff has 5% body fat. No one thinks he looks like that body fat level because the pics they're used to seeing of people at that body fat are of fitness models and bodybuilders, who are on gear. Roids increase your blood volume, thus making the veins pop out more. Natty vascularity doesn't show up on camera as well as juicehead vascularity, but I can assure you that if you saw Jeff in person, he would look pretty damn veiny.

Jeff what do you think about the US Navy & YMCA Body Fat Calculators?
Do you think they are accurate?
I -estimated- my body fat based solely on comparing how my physique looks compared to pictures of different people online and I figured I was about 18%, but the YMCA Calc says 16% and the USNavy Calc says 12%.
Thanks in advance. I do not have calipers to do your method.

Wow ima get one cause my scale measures it to using electric signals but I wanna see what these calibers say, I-m at 12% according to stand on scale but I do have 6 pack just I got really sharp definition some places and not others so it makes sense to me.

So if I can-t grab it, does that mean it-s muscle? - I-m so confused.
I know I have more muscle than fat. My muscle is clear to see but I have some fat covering it.
I-m two weeks into losing weight.
I want to know my fat percentage.

I got 1. 01 inches based on the pinch test which puts me around 19-22% fat which compares pretty well with the online calc that uses neck and waist measurements which lists me at 20. 3% so i-d say this it pretty accurate

Very poorly done video/method. You'd be much better off with flexible tape measure and variable locations on your body. Use neck, chest, waist, hips are main areas can also include thigh, calf, bicep, forearm.

Fat distribution is weird. Measuring those areas I get 1/2- leg, 1/2- belly and 1/4- chest, which would seem to be around 10% body fat, yet on my love handles I can pinch at least 2- in some spots

Ok i don't think this is working i measured between 5%-8% im 15 and i guess I'm kinda lean (visible abs and veins here and there) but I'm nowhere near Jeff here ill say I'm about 14%
