This is going to be long-winded lol. I did keto a couple years ago when I started lifting. I (probably) didn't eat as much protein as I should've. But I had an adequate amount of fat proportionately to do the diet. I felt great. Stayed on it for 6-7 months. Kept lifting. Fast forward a little over two years later. I was tired of counting calories and so I said hell with it, I'll just count carbs. My macros were all screwed up because I was eating probably more calories from protein than fat or close to the same amount. Ironically, I was eating way more calories on keto to feel satiated than I was eating on the carb diet. I had a weird day a few weeks in where I was more ravenously hungry than I had ever been in my life. Nothing satisfied. I think it was protein poisoning. The macro imbalance put me in a huge deficit relative to the energy I was burning to process protein vs the calories I was using. So, ironically, keto was more work for me to keep consuming 1. 2 grams per lb of bodyweight and it was wayyyy easier to just keep eating carbs and counting that way. You HAVE to track your macros as a bodybuilder on keto. Make sure you're eating enough fat! Or add carbs in. I find that I have to track my macros less with a slightly higher carb intake than on keto. It's easier for me just to count calories and protein intake and stay lean that way. But do whatever works for you!

Actually you need to eat a lots of leafy greens and vegetables as overall on keto. But that's not even the main point. I don't care if you are on keto, no carb, no fat, paleo maleo whatever the f--k if you are not into a caloric deficit you aren't losing weight. The benefits of keto is that it lowers your insulin spikes and for certain types of people that is absolutely crucial and necessary. If you were like Jeff who started working out in high school and never stopped - you have no need to ever go on keto. But if you have been obese for a long period of time, you were often in a caloric surplus so much that all the energy your body has used over the years were provided from the carbs in your diet, and everything extra was stored as a fat, then your body has forgotten how to burn fat, i. e. all necessary enzymes, lipo proteins. your entire endocrine system is not tuned at all to burn fat, well then you may try keto. I see keto as a form of a corrective action an not as a lifetime diet. If you get your body back on track, you can safely get away from keto, but don't return back to your old habits, switched to a balanced diet and keep working out.

I have started doing keto a while ago now and have been intermittent fasting religiously for longer. I don't know about other folks and what works for them but I know I am leaner (less fat) and am making huge gains at the same time. I have been doing HIIT and weight-based HIIT for years now. Having switched my eating habits completely over, I have gained at least ten pounds of muscle. I gained those ten pounds in a few months with IF.
That said, this won't apply to everyone. Nothing does. It does for me because of my background and how I was raised. Growing up I ate tons of fish, fowl(turkey, goose, duck) accompanied by lots of vegetables. We ate very little bread and fruit. We were outside all the time and practically lived in the woods.
I think, at least for me, if you religiously adhere to IF/keto combined, you can make gains. I did. I am not fading in my HIIT workouts. If anything I am finding them easier to the point of looking into weighted vests and cuffs.
This does not apply to everyone, of course. I think, to get what you want fully from this type of eating/fasting, most people just don't have the mental fortitude for it.

Hi Jeff, hope you will see this question because I'm very curious about your view on this one. I understand that performance declines on keto because that's exactly what I feel even by just working in the garden. However what's your view on this for someone with a sedentary lifestyle with mainly an office job and very little exercise. Working out more and reinclude carbs could be an option, however right now I'm having fantastic benefits from keto especially because it doesn't cause weight gains due to the excess of energy caused by the carbs that I'm not consuming while sitting all day. Is it correct that we should look for the function of each macronutrient and adapt those in our diet according to our activity levels/lifestyle? I noticed that consuming carbs, even the right ones in moderate amounts, would cause weight gains in periods where my workout activities are on their minimum. Thanks for your reply!

Here-s why Keto saved my life. I-m 51 years old right now. At age 14 I was wrongly diagnosed with hereditary high blood pressure and cholesterol. Took pills for both for about 25 years. When I was 17, I started eating right and exercising. My diet was low fat. Did that for 15 years. Always in great shape, but was still never able to come off the pills(hereditary right. Eventually fell off the healthy wagon and gained a bunch of weight. About five years ago, I started keto. My doctor nearly had a heart attack when I told him I was on keto. I continued anyway. Within three months, I was off all medications for high blood pressure and cholesterol. I was taking four every day. At around one year, I had lost 80lbs. I eventually started eating a little more carbs and my blood pressure started going up again! The more carbs I added, the higher it went. So, I went back to low carb and have been there ever since.

Did Keto for about 3 months with 0 exercise and a pretty lazy job and was down 40lbs, shit was amazing. Got off it for about 6 months but continued to eat lower carb in general (about 100-120g vs 20-30g) and gained about 6-8 back but it was all water. Started Keto back up 2 weeks ago back down to my original low and hit my lowest today. Going to start doing 3 total body with 2 upper/core/legs per week in some sort of combination for about 20-30mins a day. I figure now that a good chunk of fat is gone I should start putting the muscle back on in tandem with Keto, should be a fat burning machine. My current macros are 4% Carbs, 20% Protein, and 76% Fat. I'll see how that goes over the next 4 weeks or so. I also give myself some wiggle of like 2% on any of those, like today I went about 10g higher on protein, 2g on carbs.

I started doing keto 2 years ago. Went through the -keto flu- phase, picked it back up after a few months but only for a month or so then fell off again (mostly because of lack of will power. And picked it back up a couple months ago and have been staying strong (mentally and physically) here's the thing about keto for me personally. After trying other diets/lifestyles and falling off I gained the weight right back. Not the case with keto. Never had to go through the keto flu phase again either. Also, cravings were a big problem for me. Not so anymore. No more sweet tooth. I don't even crave a cheat day. And I'm energetic from morning to night. I don't weigh myself but I can see a difference in my body composition and I've never seen more progress that what I've made in just 2 months time. This is what I'm sticking to

I've been doing keto for the last three months. I lost 25lbs and felt great during those months. Of course you're going to lose size, but my muscles are as strong and more defined. I'm where I want to be weight wise. Now I can add in the healthy carbs and have a more rounded diet to maintain the weight I'm at. It's a good way to lose weight in my opinion, you're rarely left hungry and get to enjoy a lot of good food. I went from 220 to 195 without feeling I was denying myself. It does involve a lot of food preparation, but that's not so bad. I don't understand the sustainability issue. Why would you want to keep losing weight forever? You got to your weight with the diet, now you can up your calories/carbs to maintain your weight. It's not rocket science.

I have two siblings with type 1 diabetes who would tell you as Diabetes 101 info that deliberately having ketones floating around your system is absolutely toxic. Prolonged high blood sugar in diabetics causes ketones, ketoacidosis, and long-term health conditions like diabetic neuropathy and retinal blindness. I am not at all convinced that non-diabetics can get some magic benefits from putting your system under prolonged acidic stress and adrenal overload. Before the keto fad was the paleo fad, the Atkins fad, and a dozen of other diet fads before it. The latest hype is always the -diet to end all diets, - the Perfect One According To Science. I'm skeptical that this current one will age any better than all the rest.

Been on Keto about 9 days so far. My appetite is easy to control with the fats. If I come off keto at some point, I will shift to -low carb- more like Atkins diet. I know people who lost weight on Atkins and never gained it back. It's more of a lifestyle then a diet. I've lost weight counting calories in the past. Once I eventually stop counting and go off the diet, the weight comes back gradually. It takes me about 5 years to gain it back. With keto, I notice I'm automatically eating half the calories I usually do. No chips, no fries, no ketchup, no bread, no rice, no potatoes, etc. Meals are often smaller.
