Lat Pulldowns (-BAD- FORM - BIG GAINS)

The next time you do lat pulldowns in your back workout, you might want to start rocking. In this video, I-m going to show you how -bad- form on the lat pulldown could actually help turn this back exercise into an even more effective one by taking advantage of muscle movement and anatomy. Now, I-m not talking about the momentum of swinging the weights around and preventing the lats from even moving the bar. Instead, you will get focused contraction in the lat muscles and even greater range of motion capable of unlocking even more muscle hypertrophy. First it helps to understand a bit of the anatomy of the lats. The key thing you want to remember is that while the lats are large and span a wide area of the back, ultimately they have a distal attachment on the upper arm. This means, the lats are going to be influenced by the position of the arm during pulldown movements. You may have seen some people performing their lat pulldowns with an underhand grip and their elbows in front of their body while others prefer to do them with an overhand grip and their elbows out to the side. Is either one right or even better than the other? Well, from a standpoint of getting a stretch on the muscle, when the elbows are out in front of the body you can get a good stretch on the lats at the top of the pulldown since the origin and insertion will be furthest from each other. That said, if you do these sitting completely upright, you will lose the ability to really extend the elbows back behind the body (a key function of the lats) and will limit the degree of contraction you are capable of. The bar will simply come to a stop around upper navel height and the range on the exercise is curtailed. You can lean back to remedy this problem but that immediately calls into action the rhomboids and upper back muscles to take over and limit the contribution and workload of the lats. If you did the overhand pulldown instead, you-d have a better ability to pull the elbows behind the body into extension but the slightest lean back would shift the focus to the rear delts rather quickly. The next thing you can do is try the rocking pulldown instead. This will allow you to get the active adduction of the arms into the side while tilting the bar near midrange to accentuate the extension of the upper arm on one side as you finish out the movement. If you haven-t tried this variation before, you will definitely want to give this one a run. You should feel an immediate difference in the intensity of the contraction of the lats and over time, better gains from doing this exercise this way. Remember not to just start by tilting the bar down. This is not even near the same as engaging the lats first by pulling the bar down as usual to about forehead height and then performing the asymmetrical tilting of the bar

-Summary: - The pulldown shown at 4: 08 is a very effective way to train the lats. By doing a normal pulldown, you don-t have behind the body extension, which we need for maximal lat development. By doing the rocking pulldown, we get the vertical pulldown with abduction and adduction with the extension behind the body.
-Correct form: - 4: 12
-Difference between underhand and overhand grip pulldowns: - So the main difference is that underhand pulldowns don-t get the abduction and adduction with an overhand grip pulldown, which limits development.
-Common mistake: - people lean back to get the elbow behind the body, but this takes tension off the back muscles to work many other muscles especially the rear delts.
-Why this is important: - You need to train the lats in every function that they have.

1) that intro was hilarious
2) for some reason my left lat is smaller than my right one. I mean they-re both small because I just started working out again after not being able to for a couple months but I wanted to know if I could fix that and make them more even
0: 59 I see you have the same problem? Correct me if I-m wrong but from my point of view it also looks like your right lat is bigger than your left. Is it genetics? Is it diet? The way I (or I guess -we-) train maybe? What-s the problem and how can I fix it?

-Noob question: -
Lats aren't inside of the arms nor are they connected to the arms. The lats are engaged when the shoulders lower in what is basically a reverse shrug motion. Why don't we do a reverse shrug and forget the extended arm part of the motion? When doing full range my biceps get tired before my lats. Are we all doing full range simply because somebody did it this way 100 years ago and nobody thought to question it? Is this another -Captain's Chair- exercise? Our abs aren't in our legs nor are they connected.

I did this for the first time on my last workout. My armpits feel like they have a rash (because of the tearing I guess)? There is no rash, but that's what this soreness feels like. Is that normal? I want to continue doing it this way because the normal pulldown I felt was ineffective ( I never felt soreness or felt like I had a good workout )

I watch dozens of videos for health strength etc because i like to l; earn different ways BUT, think about how the great bodybuilders of the 40-s and 50-s like Steve Reeves and Reg Park etc grew their bodies without all of this knowledge, gym equipment and expensive supplements. Milk and raw eggs and hard work. SIMPLES

I actually tried the rocking variation for the first time and I never felt a stronger contraction on my lats. I've been training my lats for a few weeks before and even doing the rocking pulldown light I felt a little sore the next morning which I haven't felt after the first week of lat training.

1: 10 actually try extending completely up to stretch and tear the fascia then bring it down similarly without rocking and try your hardest to touch your chest with it. BENDING back isn-t bad at all. The one arm bull is a good accessory to the lat pulldown.

1: 14 i was like: dude, cut! The boomstick is showing in the shot. And then, waaaaaaait a minute Jeff is shirtless and is wrapped by the neck with a wire mic. And then a third time, NOOOOO that's the lat pulldown handles ---
Now time to pay attention! --

This is the problem, how much time are you going to spend on the various ways to do this exercise? If you want to live at the gym, go ahead, but I got other things to do. I say, do the basic way, with good form, and add weight as you get stronger.

I find your videos so misleading e very single video is a DONT DO THIS, DO THIS, GAIN KILLS, BIG GAINS, keep it simple go gym train with proper form and any exercise will be beneficial as long as it is performed correct.
