Im always fascinated by this ride. I have a lot of unanswered questions: somebody decided this was a great idea to put money into and build. Who was it, and why? Was this some ersatz Disney visionary? How hard did he have to fight to realize his dream? Or was it a cold calculated boardroom response to Disneys Pirates of the Caribbean? Did they go to any lengths at all to pretend they were not ripping off The Flintstones? Why is the A/C always broken in the Ice Cave? When did they put in the new soundtrack instead of (like they used to) using Danny Elfmans Breakfast Machine score from Pee Wees Big Adventure? Did they ever pay any royalties on that in the first place? If not, did they get sued? Its hard to find specific history of this attraction though theres a lot of stuff about the Boardwalk out there. I ride this thing every time I go, thinking Ill understand it better. But I never do, and Im filled with questions every time the ride ends.

When I was about 9 (almost fifty years ago now) we went on The Cave Train and when the train first went into the tunnel it sort of looked like there were spikes coming out of the walls. I bent over to avoid them and my brother reached down to see if I was ok. He knocked my glasses off my face. We looked all over the car we were in and the employees even went through the ride with the lights on to try to find them thinking they might have fallen out of the car but they never turned up. I guess someone picked them up and just didn't want to turn them in.

My wife and I visited here some years back, we found it fun. The pier has some other classics, including the carousel and the wooden roller coaster. If you take the sky ride, you may notice some of the cave dwellers enjoy it, too.

I really loved the new update for this ride, but the dark light its too bright during the ride. They really need to lower the dark light brightness. Still one of my favorite ride in Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. :)

A couple of the puns in the ride have a Flintstones quality to them, but for some reason a few of the cave people's faces reminded me of the Rugrats

When you see videos of all other theme parks, you realize how elaborate, detailed and perfect is the work of Disney and Universal

You know, the budget on this was probably 1/10th or less of what Disney has per ride. Yes, it's cheesey. but, kids might enjoy it.

Now you're in my neighborhood. I used to operate the Cave Train back in the 1970's. It's considered a classic by the locals.
