You dodged a bullet with this one! First of all, sharks are hunting at sunrise & sunset. The fishermen on Kauai warned us about that when we were camping. Nobody goes spear fishing at that time. Or surfing or snorkeling. It is great that Dorothy is so brave, but it can come back to bite her. Your going out encouraged her to follow. Not a great idea. Nothing wrong with sharks, it's just we have to learn to be respectful of what they can do. My friend swims with a group out of Makena and they do 45 minute deep ocean swims. Her swimming companion was hit by a tiger shark two years ago fatally. She is only now getting back into the water. The beaches around the 26 mile marker were recently closed because of sharks. Please be careful with how you encourage Dorothy. There is a woman surf champion who at 12 lost her entire right arm to a shark. She still surfs & competes, but is careful about where and when. We shared a hotel room with her family several years before her accident. I forget her name.

I'm really wondering about your thought process to say alright imma head out into the ocean and surf. Bc I really want to surf but I'm hella afraid of sharks even though I don't mind being in the ocean but as soon as my feet can't touch the ground I'm constantly on the lookout. And yes i know that shark's don't attack humans on purpose but the probability of being attacked is what scares me the most I guess

See the waters are getting warmer and so sharks are found more in shallow waters now.

When you made the decision to go in the water you also told Dorothy that the water was ok and she could also go surfing. Kids copy what their parents do. The biggest issue that I have with this situation is that sharks hunt at sunrise and sunset and going in the water at those times already has an increased risk of shark activity. You shouldn't surf at sunrise/sunset even if you haven't seen a shark!

Fantastic risk evaluation by your 8 yr-old; ability to update that assessment with new information and recognising the conditions are different. Dorothy is so smart and you have taught her SO much that she can use for herself for life. Absolutely awesome family! You think things through so well and communicate that so honestly - to us as well as to your kids! It is a joy to watch you all!

A shark would probably go for a shape like Dorothy's before one like Garrett's in the water. But Dorothy shouldn't be making decisions about when she can go surfing as she is still a little kid. And 'she's brave' might not be the right words for it; I'm thinking more like 'she just really wanted to'. We humans are very good at rationale. Better safe than sorry! Love to all.

You are a great parent, but you going into the water may not have been a great decision. Respect the Shark and surf another day. Especially if you didn't see her get into the water until she was already next to you. Dorothy is an amazing girl, lots of courage and strength but you are her role model. I love your family and glad you are all safe.

The fact that at the end everyone wants one more little baby on the family except for the Jess that would have to carry him or her in the future is so funny to me. I feel like the family is perfect as it is right now but now that I know or think I know that the kids want another sister or brother, then it should be put into consideration hehe

Hey Garrett, Jessica, Dorothy, Manila and Cali! Dorothy you re such a brave girl! I learn so much from all of you. I haven t ever been around sharks so to know that most of the time they aren t aggressive makes me appreciate them. I love at the end of the video when Cali calls for roll call with the pyramid on Garrett! Such a cute family!
