Anna Maria Island - Old Florida Done Just Right i moved to Sarasota siesta key back in the early 90s while attending college, and thru the decades hearing all the negativity from peoples outside the state in regards to their views of florida, all the while enjoying the gulf coast while much of it was completely off the nations radar. all the great spots from Sarasota on up to saint pete and clearwater beach. long before the masses had even known aside from the few off the beaten trail vacationers. ive never seen so many people in Anna Maria island as in this video. these were all very very sleepy towns which only saw moderate tourist during key holidays. I know its all good for business now. but man do i miss its past seclusion. a well kept secret now exposed. hopefully not to be ruined by all the newcomers. California may have better wave action for surfers, but the quality and beauty of their beaches cant hold a candle to Floridas gulf beaches. In fact Floridas beaches are even better than most world wide, including those in neighboring Caribbean islands, and even such locations in the pacific. quartz powder white sands that often cool to the touch. people that complained about Florida simply didnt have a clue what they were talking about. and i can honestly say, even as beautiful as the beaches ae today, their quality and beuty has actually come down since the 90s. if you can imagine the place being any better than it is. it very much was. substantially better in every way. time pollution and global warming has all had its toll on the place. in the 90s it all was remarkable. and didnt have all the people we see today. only the passing years of the snowbirds.

Great AMI video, so much useful information and suggestions. We are from UK and have taken vacations in Florida for past 25 years - the last 8 years on AMI. We always go second half of September when it is relatively quiet without any of the traffic jams you witnessed. Dodged a few hurricanes; terrible what happened with Hurricane Ian to the South. Also suffered with Red Tide on a couple of trips so fingers crossed for this coming September. Villa rental charges have gone through the roof (is that a US understood term) in last year so 2024 could be challenging for us. Anna Maria is something really special - we love it. And don’t miss Ginny’s and Jane’s for breakfast and cakes. Best regards to everyone in USA

Excellent video! This must have taken a very long time to put together. It is a beautiful area. My parents lived in Longboat Key for years. We have been to Anna Maria but have never done any of these activities and now I'm embarrassed! The only thing I want to point out - because I'm a negative person in general - is that all this fun will be astronomically expensive. Maybe that's why we didn't do the parasailing or the horse riding through the waves. Because it would be a small fortune - plus of course the aggressive hustling for tips. But don't let me rain on the parade. Lovely area and great video!

Just visited Cortez and Coquina beaches May 2023. Definitely not old Florida because what looks like the invasive not native Australian Pines are everywhere. Why have these trees not been removed Many other communities across Florida have to protect native vegetation and wildlife removed Australian Pine trees at great expense and inconvenience to the communities while native trees are restored for shade! I see there is massive improvement to Cortez and Coquina for parking jamming more cars in while these shallow rooted water robbing invasive Australian Pines still stand lined up and down these parks!

Of all the islands I’ve visited in Florida, keywaydin island has to be my favorite. It’s a small island that is only accessible by boat, it’s is in between Naples and Marco island which are both beautiful places. When I went here, I had the whole 12 miles of private beach to myself because there is only 2-3 homes on the island. The only downside is the 50 minute boat ride to go to any restaurant or store, but it is still very beautiful!
I usually go to Captiva island, but couldn’t go there this year because of tornado damage. Anyways I can’t wait for my trip here!

What time of year and day were these videos taken Traffic in May 2023 was just starting to lighten up I was told by residents. Anyway reservations were still needed at peak times in restaurants. Found getting around by bicycle more convenient than car even in May. Found north area of islands in this video so congested during peak season have to think these videos were deceptively taken at times most unappealing because of heat and humidity keeping crowds reduced. Was there red tide during shooting of these videos possibly keeping away

I lived there for 4 years from '96-'00. Have fond memories and enjoyed running and riding the sandy beaches and parking lots. Made some eclectic friends along the way; some have passed on. Seems like its exploded since then though. Moved just to the outskirts for a bit as well beside someone who claimed to be friends w/ two of the real life characters in the 'Perfect Storm. ' They used to fish in the winters here when New England fishing was dormant. You can never go back though

My grandparents lived on Anna Maria from the late 80s until their deaths in the 2010s. We would drive out from Bradenton at least once a month. I remember back when it was a far smaller, sleepier community that only the locals knew about - long before so many of the McMansions went up. I like going back, but it doesn't really feel like the same small town it used to back when it had my Grandma & Grandpa in it.

I was born in Bradenton at Dr. HARRIS' hospital ( neither Dr or hospital are still there. I was told doc had to leave the Christmas party where he was Santa, to deliver me. I have pictures of me in diapers on the beach. I've lived in many places but this is my home. Love it. Thank you. I'm 73 yes old

FYI its a tourist hell during tourist season and when the winter people are in florida. And good luck finding parking. I have taken many day trips to the islands. If you go during the off season you can have a real good time though even if not all places are fully operating at in the off season.

There is nothing left of old Florida on Anna Maria. The water quality has declined because of beach renourshment. More red tide is result. There have closed trout, snook etc for 7 of last ten yrs. It’s not even close. oh, btw they are about to build a three story parking garage

I've been here and it is truly beautiful. I sincerely hope that they try to preserve the island as much as possible. One side isn't any better than the other in fact, the differences between the east and west coasts of Florida compliment each other, perfectly.

Florida - where lots of old people in cars haven't a clue how to use them. Florida - where the cockroaches fly right up to you, and take you to their secret volcano lair. Florida - run by the biggest Gorilla I've ever seen. Florida - Arrive Alive, but after that.

It’s no longer old Florida sadly. Lots and lots of new very large rentals. Pine Ave (not street) as it is today is not an old Florida staple but a recent creation aimed at tourism. We are sadly being consumed by tourism development.

We have had a family owned beach house there for 70 years. It was great a long time ago. Now it is just another tourist trap. We don't even go there any more and just rent it full time.

Thanks for your always filming Florida state! Such a beautiful state I hope you will come back Key West again and staying longer. keep it up

A couple directional corrections. You go west on 64 - (not east like you say) . And left on east bay drive - (not right like said in video )

It's a great place for a visit but overdevelopment is ruining it, if you are a working person, good luck finding affordable housing.

My favorite place on earth! Great video! One correction, it is the Waterfront restaurant not Waterside. Thanks for the video!
