#1 Fly Into an Active Volcano - White Island - New Zealand

Flying into New Zealand s most active Volcano with Volcanic Air is an awesome adventure that starts from a jetty on the edge of Lake Rotorua. My sister and I started the day with a visit to the Volcanic Air sales office located near Rotarua s attractive water front to inquire about the tours available. They offer a range of options, some flight only, others a combination of flight, landings and guided walking tours, using their own fleet of helicopters and float planes. We opted for a helicopter tour that included two advertised landings, the first on Mount Tarawera to see the massive tear in the earth s crust caused by the 1886 eruption, the second on White Island, an active volcano in the Bay of Plenty. The Island looks like the result of an atomic explosion that has created the kind of eerie landscape one might expect to see on some far distant planet. I could describe the journey in more detail, but choosing the words to do justice to this amazing flight to witness at first-hand nature creating New Zealand s breath taking landscape is beyond me, so please sit back and join me for a once in a lifetime trip to see natures awesome power at work

The ignorance of this helicopter pilot is astounding. It is a significant contributor to why so many died on White Island recently. If someone who had never flown tried to tell him which switches to flick, and which lever to pull in his helicopter he would think them crazy and dangerous. Yet he is pontificating on the area of expertise of a volcanologist. To his mind, if he can t see smoke and lava, the volcano must be dormant. He was standing on Mount Tarawera which erupted in 1315. This explosion is believed to have resulted in ash clouds that affected the weather globally that year and lead to the Great Famine of 1315-1317. It was huge.
There was a smaller eruption in 1886 which killed 120 and ripped open a fissure 15km long. This is an extremely dangerous active volcano that explodes every few hundred years. It is definitely not a dormant volcano. For him to think it is dormant just because the last eruption was only a little over 140 years ago is the definition of ignorance. In the scale of time with volcanoes a century is a blink of an eye.
He is the type of person who would fly into a volcano that was showing signs of increased activity as White Island did, and think it is still safe because he can t personally see any lava. He probably thinks volcanologist can see the future and would personally knock on his door to tell him not to fly if there was a real risk. Increasing the risk warning was apparently not enough for tour operators. What a bunch of idiots. But hey, who cares about endangering lives when you can make a buck out of it?

From New Zealand: Please treat this video as a beautiful memorial dedication tribute, to all the Tourist Visitors who visited on Monday 9th December 2019. Sadly, approx 16 Tourist Visitors are not able to return home to loved ones. Having lost there lives to Mother Nature during the Whakaari/White Island Volcanic eruption that occurred. A world wide news item showed a broken Volcanic Air Eurocopter EC-120 helicopter that carries a Pilot + 4 Passengers, that is covered in the Volcanic eruption Ash as a result of a explosive eruption blast force that moved and damaged the stationary sitting 1. 5 tonne Eurocopter EC-120 helicopter off one of the landing pads bending the rotor blades during the explosive blast force. There is an example of the numerous landing pads which is seen being landed on around at 20: 00. On this video that was taken earlier in the year. The Volcanic Air Pilot + 4 Passengers along with many other Tourist Visitors were rescued off the Island by Boat and taken to Hospital. May they RIP.

20: 52 This is a privately owned island. Who are the private owners and shouldn't they have been responsible for allowing access to it when warning signs possibly suggested otherwise?
Follow up. Auckland s Buttle family owns White Island, also known as Whakaari, one of a few privately-owned islands throughout New Zealand, property records show.
The title shows their company, Whakaari Trustee, as the registered landowner.
Companies Office records show three shareholders: James Buttle of Shortland St in Auckland CBD, Andrew Buttle of Greenhithe and Peter Buttle of Mission Bay.
They each own a third of the shares in the company giving them an equal and undivided third of the island.
All three men are also the company s directors. The company was registered in 2008 and property records show the title to the 237-hectare island was issued in May 1935.
I wonder what advisement they were given in the 48 hours or so leading up to the eruption?

White Island volcano has been active for decades! Amazing that they allowed the general public i. e. tourists to go there to explore! Some adventure! Cost too many lives all for profit and greed by those tourist operators and these greedy cruise lines these days that pack people in like sardines also for profit and greed! Those aren't sleek elegant cruise ships of past decades since the 20s and 30s, they're not only floating hotels, they're ugly floating buildings! RIP to those who lost their lives and hope those who were burned survive their wounds. I'm sure they'll have CPTSD from this for years to come unfortunately! All in the name of adventure instead of using good old common sense! You don't visit live active volcanoes unless you're a volcanologist! smdh

First of all, my SINCERE CONDOLENCES to the people whose lives are now in the spirits within. Additional condolences to ANY and ALL of the People, Friends, and Family, that are experiencing the loss of these irreplaceable lives! To me, whether it is Tourists, Natives, etc, these are STILL PEOPLE! Lastly, I also send prayers and hope to the First-Responders, Rescue Team and the People of New Zealand, for what you are clearly demonstrating 300% of your efforts and resources to mitigate any further casualties in this tragic situation! I wish I were there to volunteer my efforts tirelessly! Moreover, to Tim; Your work is EXCELLENT! I HOPE you are OK!

White Island is beautiful and eerie, but if you want a volcano experience, your safest bet is visiting a shield volcano like Kilauea in Hawaii instead of a stratovolcano like this one. Shield volcanoes rarely erupt explosively like this one and you can outrun a lava flow if you have to. You're a goner if you're in the middle of a pyroclastic flow or steam eruption that stratovolcanoes produce. All active volcanoes are inherently dangerous (duh) but some are more dangerous than others. All respect to the helicopter pilots who responded to the December 19, 2019 tragedy. They are heroes.

Moral of the story: don't stand on a volcano where the ground is hot. It's white because nothing has grown back from the last eruption.
The design of this tourism doesn't accurately convey the danger and risk the tourists are taking.
According to another comment here, there are 11 unrecoverable dead miners still there, so it is a graveyard now.
I wonder if there was any nuclear testing near to this eruption?
Rest In Peace.
I hope you back up this video in case it is taken down.

Folks, I m tired of hearing about your bucket of doings. Guess who started that crap, could it be the tourist industry? No matter how you slice it the end result is all HYPE. Sports is another fraud, it s all predicated to make the mighty dollar. Be yourself, not one that has the Jones syndrome, look at what I did, have you done it? Live your life your way, be at peace in your mind, who really cares about personal deeds anyway, it s your state of mind that counts, nobody else.

Like more than you all realize, everything is about money. this is a very sad incident and you are all shocked by the loss, I feel the pain of all the families and loved ones, but five thousand children die every day in Africa. Where is the news and posts about those families? At least all these people lead a comfortable and exciting life, and had the chance to see something they wanted to see.

Our country is grieving.
