I think the smaller roadside motels work because of why people generally vacation in Maine. You come to slow down, even during the summer. People are generally really nice and nobody is in a hurry. Its not unique but they play up to the cozy feel.
Get lost and bring a paper map because GPS doesnt work is a little counter intuitive. There is a different feel to the side roads but for specifically Maine, the highways are still great. Billboards are illegal and we spend a ton of money keeping the wood line clean, specifically because its beautiful to look at. I know this was in Maine and talking for New England but those two things really separate them from the rest and undervalues Maines scenic highways.
I think the larger point was stay away from typical tourist things, mostly. Which is true, almost anything you can do there you can do somewhere else for half the price or less. Maine has a relatively low cost of living and if you can avoid some of the traps you can get a lot of value for your money.
You need Moxie to be able to drink Moxie. Fun Fact; That is where the word Moxie originates. We also seem to name our dogs Moxie a lot.

Just watched this and:
1) Moxie is actually closer to a rootbeer with a pronounced bitterness. Also, it's not really an acquired taste as you typically like it or you don't, no real in between. If you don't, more for the rest of us!
2) You forgot to mention the red hotdogs. As far as I know, it's just a Maine thing. We have natural colored hotdogs, but red is just iconic.
3) We don't all talk like Tim Sample or Bob Marley (no, the comedian.
4) Mainers have an interesting sense of humor. (i. e. You can't get there from here, you have to stahht someplace else)

Thanks for the beautiful video. Unfortunately, there were some very rude comments from some of the citizens of Maine. It seems they despise everything about tourists. They need to put up signs on every road entering Maine that state: Tourists Prohibited. I'd say that would be a warm, friendly greeting from them.

Pumpkin whoopie pies are even more wicked pissah, but I can attest that not all Mainers like Moxie: . Great tips! Although, a tip from a local - head northwest for less crowded places to see fall foliage. The Bigelow Mountains are a great place to visit in autumn and not too far from Portland.

I used to know someone who was originally from Maine but now lives here in SoCal and he said that nature here in SoCal doesn't even hold a candle to nature in Maine. I beg to differ though, but I can see how Maine in the fall and winter is beautiful. One day I'll make it over to the East Coast.

Nicely done! I'm an annual 2 week Maine resident, in the warm part of the year of course. those bugs are usually around from May until August, at least in mid to northern Maine. Southern Maine. Portland and south, could be into September. Always love me some Maine!

Also, realize that people in Maine don't like tourists. Especially in small towns and ESPECIALLY during the fall. We have a word for tourists: Flatlanders. We also won't trust anything you say and ridicule you when you leave. Btw, Route 1. Not highway one.

Whoopie pies are a Pennsylvania Dutch thing, first of all. Second, theyre amazing either way and I fully endorse Maines affinity for them because I travel the coastline as often as Im able and enjoy being able to get one at most any convenience store.

I always say when viewing the fall colors its better to towards the end of the peak time frame than the beginning. I would rather see the colors just so slightly past the peak than before but obviously the peak is the best.

I got to see Maine, back in 1990: a summer bike trip up the seacoast, from Popham Beach to Bar Harbor. I was ready to plunk down money for a summer home right then and there! But I was only 15, and I didn't have any.
