Visit Memphis - Advice from a Local Memphian - Wolters World
video description
Second, all our festivals are pretty much the same. Same vendors. Same food trucks. Same music. Memphis event planners really don't understand theming. The Greek Festival is a notable exception.
Third, the food in Memphis is not as varied as the video leads you to believe. Yes, we have many, many pork BBQ restaurants in a variety of price ranges. Yes, many places sell fried chicken and hot wings. (I ate Gus's Fried Chicken one time, and the chicken was very dry and too spicy) Otherwise, Memphis is limited to the same chain restaurants you find in any other city, plus a handful of ethnic restaurants.
Personally, I don't understand why anyone would want to visit Memphis. It was founded by three businessmen from Nashvillle, and commerce has pretty much been our only culture. Cities like New Orleans and Chicago have much, much more to offer tourists.
Anyway, you are welcomed in Memphis. Graceland and the Civil Rights Museum are unique. Also, don't miss the view of the Mississippi RIver from Tom Lee Park. It's especially beautiful at sunset.

We went a few years ago to see Wicked and I love the city.
We saw Wicked at the Orpheum, which is a beautiful historical theater.
A must do is the Peabody Ducks. They parade in and out twice a day and hang out in the lobby during the day. If you go see them in the afternoon when they go home, you can go up on the roof and see their home. It's free and you do not have to be a guest at the Peabody. But trust me, staying there is awesome.
Their zoo is amazing. Their botanical gardens are stunning. The Brooks Museum is a must see. And the national rights museum should be on everyone's list.
Beal St at night is amazing.
I highly recommend the ghost tour with Backbeat Tours.
And then there is the BBQ. Ohhh my. The ribs at the Rendezvous are to die for. Best ever. And I am from NC where the best BBQ on the planet is from. I had crappy service. didnt care. I'd go back in a heartbeat. If I had crappy service again. Would not care!
We stayed in the tourist area and never felt unsafe. I would not have ventured outside of the tourist area after dark. But that is something that happens in lots of major cities.

To me. Memphis is boreing. The people are slow. Sometimes I can't understand their slang language. I've been robbed at gunpoint 3 times. Beal St. Is a joke. If you like a city with something going on 24 hrs. A day. don't come here. This city basicly shuts down around 12 midnight in the summer. Earlyer in the winter. Be carefull walking around Beal St. Lots of crime there. Of course, if you are from Bald Nob Ark. Or Bull Frog Corner Ms. You might love it here. But if you are from LA or NY. you will see what I mean within 30 mins. Of being here.

Memphis is a dangerous, poverty stricken, unskilled labor force, city on a strong decline. Memphis lost 30, 000 residents 2010-2017 as opposed to Nashville which has 94 people a day moving in. Memphis is a sad skeleton of it's former self because it can't survive on a dead pop star and second rate bbq. We are counting the months until we can move away. Can't wait to see this depressing place in my rear view mirror. Otherwise it's only a matter of time before you become a statistic.

It's cool for a visitor who go to tourists spots. I lived here 36 years it's high crime, poverty, corrupt city council members n still segregated. Our neighborhoods are targeted by the police. Nothing for the kids to do. The inner city is totally black every section from top 2 bottom side 2 side, so imagine what wed really go through. Germantown Cordova Collierville etc. isn't MEMPHIS the whites been established that n make it known that we ARE NOT WANTED IN THEIR COMMUNITIES

Will be moving to Memphis in August. Visited 2 weeks ago to check out the city snd was fascinated with it. Im a musician and BB Kings has world class blues with really good sound. Also good food. Still deciding on where to live. Downtown is an option but really want a house with a fenced in yard for a years lease. Although I will be there two years, I do NOT like the idea of a two nyt lease. So if anyone has info which may help, please share.

I do need to correct one thing about the water. They are absolutely right if you are actually in Memphis city limits, that it's really good. However, if you go out into the suburbs (Collierville is particularly bad) there is so much chlorine you'd think you're drinking a damn pool. There is no way in hell I'd drink tap water in the burbs without filtering that mess first.

There is a lot of commentary saying that Memphis is not safe and to stay in the touristy areas. So how would a tourist, not knowing the area, ensure that he/she does not stray to the bad spots?
