Cracks and sinkholes are appearing alongside the waterways of Amsterdam.
Bicycles are tumbling into the swirling water as the canalsides vanish beneath their wheels.
Quay walls are collapsing against houseboats. Bridges are in trouble.
While the recent Covid-19 restrictions have relieved the Dutch capital from the more superficial blight of overtourism, it seems the city has a more pressing existential crisis.
It's in danger of crumbling into the water it's built upon. And only a makeover of enormous proportions can save it.
Fortunately, no one has been hurt yet, but unless it can work out how to carry out the millions of dollars' worth of delicate repairs needed, some of the beautiful medieval infrastructure that makes Amsterdam such a popular destination could be lost.
Amsterdam's day of reckoning shouldn't really have come as a surprise.

Born in the Red Light District where Dad had a small business. After serving in the compulsory Army, I fulfilled my dream since age 3, becoming a Police Officer in my famous district (until age 29) And yes, be careful with the ladies of Horizontal Pleasure. Their pimps may warn you not to take pictures. Ignore them and they may throw you into the canal. (No Joke. Enjoy your stay.

I went to Amsterdam for 5 days and in them 5 days, I saw outside my hotel balcony on different days but the same area 2 people get hit by a bike, 1 old woman and 1 man. There wasn't a time I was walking around there where I wasn't thinking about getting hit by a bike xD but that could of just been the paranoia from the weed who knows xD

Here's a question. The other ones is a customary to tip? The reason I ask this is because I was in Denmark and I was the only one who tipped in restaurants. I do it because it's just kind of second nature to me but I'm just wondering if it is the custom in Amsterdam or anywhere else

The most overrated city in the world may it be as a tourist destination, business location, etc. my take is Amsterdam is merely an obsession from the English-speaking world, especially the UK. I personally think Frankfurt to be just as great as Amsterdam

The do's of Amsterdam. do go! I was so skeptical as I thought it would be full of weed smokers and drunk English tourists (I am English) but my god was I wrong; it's a brilliant city and one that I am SO thankful I went to. It is worth the hype.

Another tip from a true Dutchman, Avoid Amsterdam like the Black Death. Amsterdam is the Plague. avoid at all costs, in fact avoid the whole randstad better yet don't come to the Hollands there are ten better provinces than the Hollands

Another tip: get on the train to fabulous ANTWERP: ) I found this city to be much more authentic, edgy, laid-back. And it has the best food. (+ you'll arrive in the most beautiful train station in the world, no joke)

Don't know if someone already said this, but just in case don't hang around drinking beer (or any other alcoholic drink) in public. Even in parks that is forbidden, unless you stop at some picnic area.

If you book a hotel room don't book a single. Yes, it's tempting because it's cheaper but it will be so small it'll feel like a tomb, and if you're already claustrophobic, fuggetaboudit.
