Thank you for posting about this town in Germany. It made me laugh a few times because I've lived in Deutschland (Germany) in years past as military. Watching your video brings back many great memories! The half timbered buildings are somewhat common all over the country, as is the older architecture, one of the many reasons I love it there. When mentioning the things you hated about the town, I was waiting for you to mention that most everything closes at about 17: 00 or 5 P. M. on week days, and completely closed on weekends. I completely forgot about those hours when I went shopping off base, but decided to play tourist and walk around town in the Walk Platz anyway. Beer places Guesthouses (miss pronounced maybe) are usually open for the locals to relax and unwind after work. Germans are usually very friendly in helping a curious tourist, especially if one tries with just a few words to speak the national language. I love practicing them to visiting Germans here in the states.

The Harz region is a little underrated. In Germany it has the perception of a boring and dusty region for middle aged german tourists. That is probably unfair because the Harz really has also a lot to offer for young people now. I know many young adults who go there skiing, mountain biking or just enjoying nature while hiking through the forests. Although it is a bit rural and difficult to reach it is also quite central in Germany and therefore a good destination for a short vacation. Additionaly, the Harz region is also very interesting in terms of history because the Brocken mountain was part of the wall that divided Germany into two countries. You will see many buildings and sights which are reminiscent of that particular area.

Spent two days in Quedlinburg in 2019. LOVED IT! People were so friendly and the buildings were fascinating. Was planning to visit nearby towns, too, but instead decided to explore every nook and cranny of Quedlinburg. The fact that it was off the beaten path for international visitors was actually a selling point for me. Friendly people are more important than language barriers. Only regret was not being in the area longer to explore the other towns and take some mountain hikes.

Wernigerode is popular with railway enthusiasts from all over the world on account of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB, which operates a network of lines. The most popular of these is the line up to the top of the Brocken. Although its a risky proposition as it may be very misty, a trip to the summit in winter can be really exhilarating if you get a clear, sunny day.

This is in the former GDR so that might explain the difference in service. However, since it's a little old-fashioned, a little old-fashioned manners go a long way. If you try to speak German they really appreciate it and will share a bit of humour with you as you struggle with those huge German words.

I am surprised you didn't mention the Teufelsmauer. There is so much folklore there and just a wonderful hike. You can see all the surrounding villages. My mother grew up in Weddersleben and I am lucky to have had a lot of the folklore of the Teufelsmauer and the Harz area explained to me firsthand.

I've got a request: I know you guys have done a TON of travel within the U. S, but your channnel's playlist for US travel doesn't seem to reflect that. Will you kindly consider updating that playlist, as travellers like me are re-exploring options and designing domestic-based trips? THANK YOU!

Also in the Harz and for the brave:
titan-rt. de - one of the longest suspention bridges.
My recommendation: rent an RV / Motorhome and take your time.
Remember to check for german school holidays, it will be crowded and not easy to find a spot for the night.

Germany is one of my favourite countries in the world. I've been a few times but there are still loads of places I want to visit there including the Harz mountains.
Have you been to Spreewald, Mark? Because that's another place I want to visit.

I went here years ago, and it was AMAZING. Totally worth it. It's not got a whole lot of tourist 'stuff' like a major city, but it feels like that American stereotype of what Germany is. So much beauty that wasn't' blown away by war.
