Easter Island has a unique landscape with volcanic craters, lava formations, glowing blue water, beaches, low hills, cattle farms and many archaeological sites, most of them devoted to the study of moai figures. They reach a height of 10 meters. One of the figures, on Anakena Beach, has been placed almost in its original position, and a plaque commemorating Thor Heyerdahl's arrival in 1955 has been placed nearby.
The remaining figures are scattered around the island. Each of them has its own name. Poike is an open-mouth statue that is much loved by the locals. Ahu Tahai is another notable statue, with beautifully shaped eyes and a hair stone on the top of its head.
