I AM from cologne. And there is much more between Cologne and Dusseldorf (dussel is german for a goof oder a hobbledehoy)You better go into a pub in Cologne and in Dusseldorf then you better see the differences between the cities. Btw: The best thing of Dusseldorf ist the Autobahn to Cologne; -)

I was in Stuttgart during the beer festival and apart of drinking beer (which was, by the way, delicious) I had something similar like you - a tiny bottle of alcohol. It wasn't that hard to keep the bottle cap on the nose. You should definitely go to a beer festival in Germany: )
