This is the McLaren W1, McLaren's latest ultimate series car and the third McLaren to wear a '1' badge, after the F1 and P1. There are familiar things, too. It has a carbonfibre tub, with an engine in the middle and is only rear-wheel drive. Yet now it has a whopping 1258bhp for those rear wheels to contend with. Can it manage it And if so, how Join Matt Prior as he talks to the W1's chief engineer for the full run-down, then tries the W1 on both road and track. And for more, join us over at autocar. co. uk. Oh, and here's the tech spec. There'll be 399 W1s and, yes, they're all sold. Price 2, 000, 000 Engine V8, 3988c, twin-turbocharged petrol, plus electric motor Power 1258bhp (engine 916bhp at 9200rpm, motor 342bhp) Torque 988lb ft at 4500-5000rpm (engine 664lb ft, motor 324lb ft) Gearbox 8-spd dual-clutch automatic, rwd Dry weight 1399kg 0-62mph 2. 7sec Top speed 217mph CO2 310g/km Max downforce 1000kg

Matt always does the in-depth review. The cameraman should be congratulated for showing more of the car details than simply following the discussion (or gassing in some cases.
This car has a number of interesting features - including some that we probably need to thank Dallara for.
Matt did not comment on the engine in detail but 229bhp per litre is very respectable.
One aspect that I have not seen before is the very clever mounting of the front wishbones in double shear than is then placed in single shear on the chassis. A very neat design indeed. The heave spring layout is also fairly rare on road cars.
Would I buy one of these instead of a second hand Singer Yes. Instead of a complete collection of exotics No.
However, it is very clear that MacLaren have done a super job here - although a much smaller car would be the way to go imho.

It's just awesome to see how McLaren gives journalists the access to their engineering teams directly not going with PR teams.
With this new W1 McLaren definitely step it up the hypercar game that suspension setup and the fact that they are pushing over 1200 bhp just trough rear wheels is just insane
Great video

I doubt many W1s will ever get driven in slippery conditions, but with that much torque and RWD only, it must focus the mind somewhat. lively.

The battery obviously isn’t a structural component of the car if it’s easy to take out lol The case it’s in might be.

Why does the W1 have the same top speed as an older Lamborghini Aventador SVJ
This is supposed to have more power right

I was waiting for Autocar's review. Matt Prior is the most sophisticated car reviewer on You Tube and always a pleasure to watch.

That was an incredibly boring review for one of the coolest cars released this year. Actually shocked by how bad this was.
