I'm lucky enough to have owned all three models, and I agree entirely with the boys analysis and conclusion - nice to hear honesty about drawbacks but I think you can drive around those present in the older cars, whereas its harder to be tolerant of those in a new model. History makes the heart grow fonder though.

Best sounding M cars:
1. 4cyl E30 M3 (the only 4cyl)
2. 6cyl E36 M3 (E46 too raspy, F80 is just farting)
3. 8cyl E92 M3 (E39 a bit lumpy, like a US V8)
4. 10cyl E60 V10 M5 (the only V10)

Lots of people writing about the M5. Those are massive sedans - same as an E-Class or Cadillac CTS. Great cars for family use, but the M5 is nowhere near the driver-s car as the M2 & M4.

Sorry but as lovely as the E30 M3 might be its four-pot simply doesn't have the aural presence of the inline sixes. The M2 Competition will probably just edge it for me. the torque.

This video made me laugh - I had an E34 M5 3. 6 when my eldest kids were young, and they grew up believing 'M' stood for 'Mental', and was because M cars went sideways. -

Now everyone knows the E30 M3 is so underpowered it can't even drift; P. And your E46 M CSL car doesn't have a manual Of Course - so it's Rubbish.

i'm lucky enough to have owned an e30 and e46 M3, if i could, i'd but the e30 body on the e46 chassis with a manual box: ) great vid!

E36 M3 is the best and most fantastic BMW ever made, and at 2nd place: OF COURSE it-s the E46 M3 CSL. All newer BMW-s just go home.
