Today we're accompanying the InterRegio 2340 (Locarno - Luzern - Basel, which was rerouted via Lufelfingen due to construction work in the Hauenstein base tunnel. The route via Lufelfingen is the original connection between Olten and Basel from 1858, with gradients equivalent to those on the Ltschberg and Gotthard mountain passes. The old tunnel was also the first major tunnel through a mountain constructed in Switzerland. The old line used to be double tracked, as can be seen in the tunnel. It was reduced to a single line track in 1938 due to most traffic now using the base tunnel which opened in 1916. To see the track during daylight, see the following video: Usually there isn't much to see at night, however, due to the snow and new hi beam lights on the freshly overhauled Re 420, its not too bad (aside from some focusing issues. These trains no longer run with the Re 420 units and have been replaced by Re 460 push pull compositions since the opening of the Gotthard base tunnel. Beforehand, they would stop at many stations on their way to Locarno. Now, the 2340 ends in Erstfeld, where a FLIRT EMU continues on the old Gotthard route. I wonder what the lights are for? You can't see far enough ahead to pull up in an emergency and in any case, the train is stuck firmly on the rails so you cannot take evasive action. Maybe it's just for phycological reasons - it is sort of comforting! Only joking! Mabe it is so the train can be seen. I can understand marker lights in the daytime.

This was great - love the way the lights twinkle through the trees and the fences. Are the lights on the small stations on all night, or are they triggered by the approach of the train? We see very few wild animals in these cab ride videos through Switzerland - why is that? In a British equivalent video you would probably see the odd rabbit at least.

Was the 420. 2 modernised technically, or is it still the old fashioned traditional control systems? The lights at Olten look fantastic with the snowy ground. I love the feeling when you go out from the built-up area that you're plunging into a little world of your own.

I disagree with some of the negative comments. This was far more interesting than I expected it to be and had a great atmosphere. Thank you for doing it. I look forward to seeing the same route in daytime.

You should find a train which departs at about the time the sun has just setted. During dusk and twilight you have more detail in the surroundings and the balance of artificial and sky light is most pleasing.

Very interesting as cab rides go. Loved the first few minutes intermingling with other trains in the station and then seeing the lights of the cities around us. Very nice video. Thank you.
