Driver's Eye View - Tisovec to Zbojsk- - Standard Gauge - Rack Railway (Slovakia)

For this trip a camera was fixed to the front of the train to record the complete journey between Tisovec to Zbojsk- with Class 40 steam rack locomotive No. 4296 built by MAV. This is not strictly a driver-s eye view because the for safety reasons the locomotive pushes its train up the hill and a second man rides on the veranda of the leading carriage, communicating with the driver using a flag to indicate whether or not it is safe to proceed. The camera was left running throughout, including the tunnels and photographic runs allowing tour participants to appreciate the train from the line-side. This camera position gives an excellent view of both the line ahead and the difficult terrain conquered by this almost unique railway, including a number of lofty viaducts. The line is located near Brezno, a town well positioned to visit a number of Slovakia-s varied and interesting railways. To see a video showing more line-side views

That's a beautiful area for the train to go through, which I guess is one reason why it's survived. I wonder if you know whether they maintain the steam loco only because tourists like it, or if it was maintained because it was cheaper to run than a diesel?
I had an idea when I commented on one of your other videos that there was another name for this type of railway, but I couldn't remember it off-hand so I called it a -cog- railway, but -rack- railway is the same thing. The teeth on the cog fit into the teeth of the rack, providing extra traction on steep inclines.

I wasn't expecting that roughly the first third and the last quarter of the journey would be sans rack, but obviously (obvious to me now) only the middle part of the journey is steep enough to require the rack.
It's a lovely ride anyway through some very picturesque scenery.

That passing loop at Tisovec - Banovo must've been in need of repair as there were signs(assumedly) warning against trains running along the track, placed at each end of the passing loop. (at 17: 00 to 18: 35.

Very nice train ride. My favourite part is when it goes over the viaducts back and forth. Pretty cool. I suppose that was meant for shunting.
