To me, New Plymouth is the -City of Smiles-, in my opinion it is one of the happiest cities in the world, everybody is smiling and laughing, the place has a great feel to it. This video starts with the ever popular steam locomotive -Ja Class No. 1271- at the head of a -Steam Incorporated- excursion to Whanganui, where we are met with a traditional Maori welcome before boarding the -Waimarie- New Zealand-s only authentic operational coal-fired paddle steamer for a trip on the Whanganui River. After Whanganui we hit the road again and it-s not long before the majestic outline of -Mount Taranaki- appears on the skyline, sometimes referred to as -Mount Egmont- this dormant stratovolcano dominates the Taranaki Skyline. We take the scenic coastal route to New Plymouth stopping off at -Opunake Beach- to watch the surfers making the most of the waves breaking on the sandy shoreline. Next stop is Oakura where holidaymaker-s splash and play in the Oakura river as it flows across the sandy beach to meet the ocean. This is a beautiful stretch of coastline where holiday baches have morphed into wonderful architectural gems over the years to make the best of the ocean views. A little further on we reach New Plymouth where there is a choice of excellent chalet-s complexes, hotels and Holiday parks to stay at. Chaddy's Charters offer trips around the Sugar Islands in an old British Lifeboat accompanied by an informative and amusing commentary. For those who enjoy walking or cycling there is an easy promenade pathway along the New Plymouth waterfront starting at Port Taranaki it follows the Tasman Sea coast to the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, shaped like a giant wave, or whale skeleton it takes the path across the Waiwhakaiho River, the path continues to Bell Block. Next we head inland to the foot of the massive mountain where native forest dominates the foot hills and stunning watercoarses carve their way through volcanic rock, creating features such as the Wilkes Pools and Dawsons Falls. Finally we take a helicopter flight with -Heliview Taranaki- to the very top of the mountain from where awe inspiring views over the whole Taranaki region can be enjoyed. This video was filmed between 2009 and 2019

Hi James, this is the part of New Zealand, New Zealanders keep to themselves, it really is a little bit of paradise in an otherwise mad world. Foreign holiday makers skip New Plymouth because it's not on the way to somewhere else, it is a destination in itself.
