Hello folks, Welcome to this trip report bound to Portland OR with the famous Amtrak Cascades services operated by the Talgo train serie 8. - - TRIP INFORMATION - RECORDED IN JUNE 2020 Railway company: Amtrak Train type: SC-44 Charger and Talgo Serie 8 From: King Street Seattle to Portland Union Station Time: 3h30 Price: $55
Date: 2024-01-09

8: 15 that's not actually a Boeing factory. It's an airport (usually called Boeing field although it's not the official name) that is where Boeing delivers all of the 737s to customers and finishes and delivers KC-46 tankers to the USAF. The aircraft are built in Renton (737) and Everett (Tankers. It's also home to Boeing's flight test program for commercial aircraft.
I also prefer the trip North from Seattle to Vancouver, BC. It actually follows the edge of Puget Sound for a good bit between Seattle and Everett.

I take the Amtrak Cascades all the time and I miss the old cars, they were nice. Now, the Amtrak Cascades has the typical Amtrak colored cars, but the interior is relatively new. I usually take the Amtrak Cascades between Tacoma and Seattle, I then take the Thruway Bus operated by Amtrak Cascades between Mount Vernon Wa, and Seattle. I miss the straight through train route.
Edit: Now I know the cars Amtrak Cascades is borrowing are 50 years old. It's just they get refurnished all the time. They're called Horizon Cars.

This USA Talgo variant front/back looks weired compared to the original Spanish Talgo train & has aerodynamics like a cup board or a 1960s semi truck.
such accidents as shown - 12: 08 are preventable by installing a suitable (literally) speed enforcement safety system on the tracks (an Osaka communter train at the Amagasaki Curve had to experinece the same [literally] learning courve at APR 2005, crashing into a building, see -Seconds from desaster- S06E05 -Runaway Train-)

I was in Seattle and have rode this train twice but back in the early 2000's to Portland. I upgraded to Business Class on the way back which included a meal for a $10 upgrade. The other time there was an issue with the Talgo train so it was on a regular Amtrak train. There use to be service via the Amtrak Pioneer from Portland, Boise and then SLC but that ended back in the 90's and never returned. Which meant I had to take a bus overnight which was an expeience in itself.

As a dutchie the American approach to trains is amazing to see. You guys seem to treat them more like airplanes than like trains as far as what I-m used to.
Over here you just hop in and out, you don-t check in baggage or even speak to anyone. Just scan your PT card and catch the train.
Very interesting, and very cool. Altho I doubt ridership will increase soon if this system isn-t changed.

These cars were initially ordered for a Wisconsin Hiawatha extension, but the project was cancelled then, so now they are sitting in Talgo's maintenance facility in Madison, WI. though recently they were ordered by WSDOT since one of the Series 6 cars were destroyed, and Amtrak has announced they are replacing the Series 6 cars with the new Siemens Venture cars.

Not being able to wait on the platform always bothers me about rail travel in the US. About a month ago I had to catch an Intercity train in Australia and before I even went inside to grab my ticket I went to the platform and photographed my train. I find not waiting on the platform to be quite a pointless method that really doesn't improve safety very much.

The king street station is beautiful! Much better than what I-ve seen last time years ago was awful looking. Tiago trainset looks interesting. I believe it can top 110 mph if they upgraded tracks and signaling etc. I hope someday they upgrade to high speed rail in near future
reply

I Denmark the state railway DSB had ordered some talgo train for the Denmark to Germany Route should be delivered in about two years together with the new Vectron E locos it will be a Pleasure, and also Germany has ordered talgo trains for some InterCity Services
reply

Sorry folks. the Spanish loco is ugly. the Siemens is great. The train IS fast. I usually travel business or have a room. the LEAST fun trains are the East coast commuter trains. Love the Empire Builder, California Zepher, and the City of New Orleans.
reply

I live in Vancouver Wa and rode Amtrak between Vancouver (WA) and Seattle twice a month back in the early 90-s when Amtrak was experimenting with high speed trains on the NW corridor. I wish the experiment had continued.
reply

Amtrak just announced the replacement plan for all Talgo cars. The will be replaced by Siemens built bi mode train sets. This means by the end of the decade, there will be no more Talgo train sets in America.
reply

The Talgo is shared by Oregon and Washington, the route runs from Eugene, Oregon and runs all the way to Seattle, possibly even all the way to Vancouver. B. C. I have rode the train several times and it is very good!
reply

The reason for security in Seattle is because of Antifa and BLM, they don't want the station burned down or vandalized. I don't understand why ANYONE would choose to visit Seattle OR Portland these days,
reply

What madness to continually blow the whistle of the locomotive. I already know about the continuous accidents that occur at level crossings in the US. Fortunately in Spain the use of the whistle is residual.
reply

The 'Cascades' and 'Coast Starlight' will return to the Point Defiance Bypass on 18 December according to Amtrak press reports. I believe the re-route will shave roughly 8-minutes off the current schedule.
reply

Welcome to India i am expecting you to Make videos on Indian raiways. I would highly recommend 3 routes, from South India which you like. Highly recommend to take Vistadome coaches on these trains.
reply

wow, this is a great service connecting two large cities in the PNW. Someday in the future I could totally see this be upgraded to a high speed corridor with service on the BC
reply

Here-s an idea: Employ windows that can display messages describing the view outside. They would attract passengers and needn-t be very expensive. Kids would like them.
reply

the King Street station actually isn't made up of union and King St, Union station is across the tracks and is used as the regional transit board (sound transit) main offices
reply

12: 07 Although the loss of life was slight this was one of Amtraks worst days. It was the inaugural run of a new line & there was diaster. Similar to the titanic.
reply

The seats look like plane seats (and that's certainly not good) Less leg room? really? This is exactly the opposite of what Amtrak should be doing! Very disappointing!
reply

So that's not actually the Boeing factory; those are in Renton (737) and Everett (767, 777. This is the narrowbody delivery center, and is used as a base for testing.
reply

The read along is no good. It takes to long to stop video & read (20 minutes becomes 60. If you just read you miss all the beauty. Needs narrated.
reply

Was never a big fan of the series 8 seats. Even when they were new, my back would be aching by the end of my OLW-PDX trips.
Great video btw!

reply

In regards to station being locked from the inside & verification of ticket, there's been a large abundance of transient/homeless in/around the area.
reply

Never knew the cascades have steps. when i visted in 2019 they only have some yellow stand on the floor and put inside when closing doors
reply

Yuck. these are ugliest things to ever be designed and put on rails.
Absolutely hideous.
Designed by people who hate decency.

reply

I live in Melbourne and went to Vancouver in sep 2019. Took the Amtrak Cascades to Seattle. A lot better than i expected for amtrak
reply

17: 03 that trestle was used by the columbia cowlits railroad a shortline in kelso/longview (thought id use my foamer knowledge to help)
reply

Everybody thinks the colors of the Talgo are Dark Green and Brown. Their -official- names are -Evergreen and Double Latte-!
reply

I much prefer the Cascades between Seattle and Portland rather than the Coast Starlight. It's brighter and less crowded.
reply

It's a shme that you missed the most scenic part of this route, from Bellingham to Seattle. Thanks for the great videos.
reply

4: 32 -These Chargers are pretty quiet for Diesel engines. -
Thats because they-re actually diesel-electric engines.

reply

The final station was really in Canadian Vancouver? This station seems like it was in town for 30 000 inhabitants!
