In the hills of Clarksburg, West Virginia behind a quiet, residential community, a small, backyard railroad runs between the trees. The Locust Heights and Western Railroad is a privately owned and operated railroad that began in 1974 with the construction of a replica type-A vertical boiler Climax steam locomotive. This was one of the common early designs of logging railroad locomotives in North America. During the summer, the railroad gives public rides on most Wednesday evenings over their three quarter mile long loop of track. In the spring of 2018, I participated in a photography event that was put on as a fundraiser for the railroad. Come along as we watch the little Climax locomotive pulling recreated logging railroad trains through the forest on the Locust Heights and Western Railroad

Before I found out that this little guy was a Class A Climax locomotive, I thought he was a tram engine. I likely thought this because his boiler is surrounded pretty much entirely by his cab, and he-s also kind of boxy (no offense. He also has a whistle that is a bit too loud for a locomotive his size. :P It might work well on a traction engine, too, though it still kind of suits the locomotive, sounding very much what a small logging locomotive should sound like. Thanks for filming this loco, Mike! I love him. First Class A Climax I-ve seen in action. Very cool. :)

First time in many years I've seen a vertical boiler in operation, I used to have certificates for all boilers ( up to 300 hp, Land only, and that didn't include Locomotive boilers ), But qualified to Water tube, Firetube, Colonial, Economic, Oil and Gas, and Vertical Boilers, Very crucial water level on these and Bent Tube water Tube boilers! All gone now replaced by computers and gas, ( no operator i person, in a control room watching a computer screen, Very Sad ), so called modern techknowledgy?

Wow that is such a weird and cool locomotive! Also cool vid. Can you get to niles canyon for the october diesel and steam? I-ll be there! (I-m not that guy wanting to meet up just saying I-ll be there)

that-s pretty cool to have something like that in your backyard. I wonder how the neighbors like the squeaks and whistle. The track could stand a little maintenance.

Interesting little railroad. And, love the old cars. I'm thinking Model A? Think I also saw an early pickup truck and one even looked like a flat bed truck. Thanks for this.

It-s so weird to think that this probably what the 1900s in America looked like. Especially since cameras back then were not exactly up to par with Cannon cameras.
