Truthfully, shipping containers are a horrible way to build a home. They are expensive and far from an ideal building method. Shipping container homes became trendy in the early 2000s when the environmentally conscious building movement started. Back then, single trip containers were under $1, 500.
I built a shipping container home for a relative back in 2007, and I learned how far from ideal they are. The design I came up with was 2 containers spaced apart with 2 additional containers stacked on top going the opposite direction. I had to build 2 ground level walls to fill in the space left between the containers and build two walls on the second level to fill in the space between the two upper level containers. I then built a roof closing the entire space in.
No wood was used in the framing or structure. Everything was welded steel construction.

You have a beautiful family and i love watching your show but i disagree with you on taxes. Even tho you live off grid, do you wonder how you get merchandise that you need that you order on line. Do you wonder how those roads get built that allows transportation to reach you. Or how people would put out a house for with no firefighters. Yea, I'm just offering a different opinion, because without laws and government, you have anarchy. Also, love seeing your babies, from watching you, I'm sure you are a great father. I live in wichita, ks. Retired 77 year old, and my wife and i are foster parents, and for 4 years we've had 2 sets of twins thatwe've brought home from the hospital. And trust me, they are a lot of work, but worth every bit of it. Wishing you continued happiness and success.

I just found you guys after thinking you gave up and went your separate ways just thinking in. how I saw the hardships of life 1000 times what we see from you. It all looks superficial and choreographed to much as to your experience. actually felt lost when I couldn't find you all these years. Still not sure where I am in the sequence of your posts. Good luck fine sir and lady how many of your viewers would be capable of your dedication. You were discussing how you feel less secure now and I thought how it would be to be your extra set of eyes and ears this old man could be of a use to a family that is so on their own and the only talking is with a bunch of typed words as correspondence. I will not miss a single post from you at this point of time

I see two unhappy people. I see an old man at work (not a young man. There are no smiles (like in the start. I see a girl who doesn't care how she looks anymore. You have made a life that is very arduous, with the hunter gatherer style as well as all the building. I think it might be too much. Looking after 3 young kids without any modern cons to help (or a husband) cannot be fun. You need to get a helper and just concerntrait on the house. Do the landscaping stuff latter.
I think you both need a holiday, leave the kids with grandma, and eat out every day so you both get away from the daily grind.

Man I dig the content, that alone is more than enough to keep me interested. Why do u exploit ur woman the way that u do She's a beautiful lady, the show should be called off grid living with my wife's tits and ass. Shame on her for allowing u to do business this way. 2 beautiful ppl doing good things is honestly enough to keep ppl interested. I came across this and I enjoyed the content, I just hate seeing a beautiful person put their body out there just because. Thats yours man, u shouldn't want others to fantasize about what ur lady looks like naked and worse. Sorry I had to say something.

That comment Nicolle made at the end, .maybe one of our kids will get married under it - you never know! got me with all the feels. I felt like I got a tiny glimpse into the future and saw the lookback on this video at the wedding. There are so many incredible memories and achievements being made on this land and with your family. Thank you for letting us have a peek and come along for the ride. I know we are just faceless names on a computer to you, but I feel so invested in the well-being of your family and am always so amazed at all you have accomplished.

Regarding asparagus, if I remember right, you definitely should not overharvest it unless you always want spindly. Yes, crop with a poor root system. You need to let it age a little bit and let them grow to fruition and bury and enrich their roots underneath, and then eventually you will have crops with Fat asparagus like a half inch, thick stock and pick them when they're less than eight inches. But don't overharvest them. You want to get sick of them after two weeks and then let them go back to flourishing to fruition and maturity to strengthen the roots.

Dude, I absolutely love your idea of dimensional lumber, 1X3’s, 2X7’s, keep it up you’ll start a revolution in the lumber industry. Oh, and would you please work smarter! Leaning and pulling like you are on some of those cants is going to hurt your back, push when you can pull, work up close, don’t extend over heavy work. Get yourself a log hook to rotate your cants, easier on your body. Keep up the great work, you are on mission!

This is my favorite! Back at the land, I am loving the PNW property and projects. Hard work for Jake ahead, but how nice watching Nicole and the kids enjoying fresh air, sunshine and healthy lifestyle. Nicole I envy your garden, havests, both wild and not. I love watching you harvest, prep and prepare with one baby (or two) on your hip. Foxy makes me laugh every episode! Can’t get enough of the kids. Good job, I can’t wait for next episode

you really need to get yourself a can hook. You’re gonna have an accident if you don’t jam your fingers why rolling the log can make that log rolling 10 times easier also, if Little boys and girls around I’ll be definitely putting that sawblade cover on that Saw. You’re obviously have an experienced a sore blade coming off your bandsaw when running at full revs

That sawmill is tuff. When that back get that ouch. Wow u should have got one with the flipper hit the button and it can tell u how many boards u can get out of a stick of wood. It 24/7 isn't it. I'm really looking forward to this build. Just my opinion but do you really want stuff like that in the yd especially with all of that produce out there with the bears.

Can you grow Rosa rugosa, Rugosa canina, or Rosa damascena there How about Malpighia emarginata, Barbados acerola’ cherries These are pretty much the best natural sources of vitamin C, can be cultivated, allowed to grow wild in the food forest, and can be prepared for various usages. Should be right up your alley, Nicolle.

Jake. As a old timer who has researched so many alternative energy sources for cost efficiency as well as long term, i found that electro magnetic energy out shines all others buy far. Maintaining is minimal, and lasts a life time. Would be perfect for your family and life style. Look into it and see for your self.

I love you're videos I build steel cabins, ime just passing comment, you could of used 100 x 100 mm x 6mm box section for the dividing posts. cheaper & Still as strong as the RSJ posts you're using. You're still doing a fabulous job BTW. we built modular buildings 5 yrs ago 39 box's in 3 floors. That was epic.

In the late 1960s I lived on a self-sustaining organic farm in southern Oregon. In winter we tried to keep the cole crops producing as long as possible but finally got really tired of beans and rice and then in March and April the strawberries and asparagus came in - you can’t believe what a treat it was!

I brought home 1/2 gal of water from gulf coast and then ran it threw a coffee filter then set on stove at a low simmer not quiet a boil and just the half gal of sea water produced way more salt than I expected enough to fill my salt shaker and it tasted great.
