Does that trolley sound familiar? Its one of many elements in this scene that will ring true for fans of the show Mister Rogers Neighborhood. In narration, the director Marielle Heller said that she and her crew shot this sequence for her new film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood in the same studio where the television show was shot in Pittsburgh. These details help bring the series back to life for viewers, while helping one of the films characters have a moving experience on set. Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys, is there to interview Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks, but ends up having his own emotional reaction while watching the taping of a segment. Heller said they used the same style and brand of broadcast cameras the original show used to present it on video monitors within the scene. But they also used a digital camera to capture Vogel. Technically, it was a very tricky scene, Heller said. It concludes with a zoom-in on Rogers as he is performing as the puppet Daniel Striped Tiger. Its a striking moment with Hanks that Heller said was achieved with a bit of trickery. She didnt tell the actor that the camera was focusing on him during the shot.

I hate hearing these arrogant Hollywood movie people, a type with which I'm intimately familiar as a lifelong NYC resident, corrupt and exploit Mr. Rogers. It's even more ugly to hear them talk about their craft in such a pompous tone of voice--punctuating their speech with likes and sort ofs that are calculated to sound both casual and professorial at the same time. This rant will be hard to understand for those who haven't had the displeasure of living alongside these people for years. Journalists are similar. They're all smart and educated and ALL of them obviously believe that they are way smarter and more educated than they actually are.

Its really cool that they let them use the original studio for the filming of the movie. To me that makes the movie even more authentic that theyre not trying to re-create the studio the way they think it would look like and were able to just use the original studio to capture the movie that they were trying to tell just kind of made it more look authentic. The studio hasnt been used since Mr. Roger retired so bringing it out one more time for movie a for Mr. Roger is is a nice tribute.

Such a wonderful movie. It's unconventional approach - it's not at all a biopic of Fred Rogers - delivers on the soul and impact of Mr. Rogers far more than a straightforward, traditional biopic might have. Extraordinary performances by both leads, and some stunningly powerful moments, delivered by a gifted filmmaker shooting with clear intent and understanding. Can't wait to experience it again!

But. I dont believe for a second that Tom Hanks never knew you were filming him in that cubby behind the set. Hes a two-time Academy Award winning actor with decades of film history. he wouldnt even need to glance at a camera to know if one was on him on a film set. Also. theyd have set up lighting to pick him up. Not a chance that he didnt know.

Its strange to see Mr. Rogers behind that set piece, voicing the puppet. because even though I knew that Mr. Rogers did the voices for the characters. I never really thought about it like that. or pictured him sitting behind a wall, crouched down doing the puppets. Its a strange image.

All this talk about the cameras filming while they film. blah blah blah. just say what it really is. INCEPTION!
