Paula Sojo, 19, from Canada, first started developing symptoms for Crohn's disease back in October 2020. As her health quickly deteriorated, Paula was rushed to hospital where she received an official diagnosis for the inflammatory bowel disease. Paula endured eight months in hospital and 14 operations, before surgeons eventually revealed she would need a proctocolectomy, a procedure which involves removing the colon and rectum, and replacing it with an ostomy bag. Paula told Truly, I was really devastated. I was thinking there's going to be this bag of poo on me and I'm going to feel so ugly. But two months after the operation, Paula decided to start embracing the ostomy bag. Taking to TikTok to share her journey, Paula soon racked up 129, 000

I had this surgery too back in 2016 and was in the hospital for 3 months. Two surgeries later and all I have now is a round scar where -the bag- used to sit. My large intestine is gone and my small intestine goes all the way down so I can go to the toilet like normal(with meds to slow down bowel movements! So grateful for that. And this girl is so brave. I was devistated and never wanted anyone to know about my bag. But I also didn't have any accessories. -

That family friend deserves recognition. She made her the first bag cover out of care and love in order to help this young lady feel better about herself. Maybe not public recognition for having a hand in helping her but more of a -this is the woman who helped me realize this could go much further because of her act of kindness-. Idk. This is a short video maybe I-m overthinking. I-m glad she-s doing well and embracing it. As she should.

Bless you, I'm so sorry the surgeons did this. So many many natural options and the drs dont even talk about it because they dont know. It means more major life and diet changes and they just think surgery is the only option. For those going through this, know there are alternatives to this life. I'm now 14 years after Crohn's with zero symptoms.

Now, this is one video I applaud. These kind of things really show strength of character and give hope to so many. It is interesting and opens eyes. Better than full body tattooed idiots who moan that others judge them, or those who want to look like a barbie or other people who should seek mental health help.

Don-t ignore symptoms of UC. I ignored symptoms for 8 years before I sought treatment. I-m surprised I-m still alive. I was bleeding up to 8 times a day in the toilet. Funny thing about this disease is that some of us do not feel any pain from it just like me.

Gosh I need to do this with my ostomy bag, I miss wearing low rise jeans, or normal bikini bottoms! Granted I have much more scars than she does due to just more surgeries, but who cares! People can handle the look of scars way more than an ostomy bag-

Your story is so similar to mines I just haven-t found the confidence to own it due tu bad relationships but now I-m single I-ve realised that the most important relationship in your life is the relationship with yourself

I can't help but think of a little boy named Seven who was repeatedly bullied because he had an ostomy bag. The child committed suicide. People with ostomies did a photo shoot called -Bags Out for Seven. -

The more we normalize this the better! No one should ever feel less or feel to need to hide their medical aids whether that be a mobility aid or something that can be a life saver like an ostomy

I had mine reversed but will probably have one again. I could never come to terms with it. I have Crohns as well. She inspires me. This is a lifelong battle

Very cool. A great way to embrace your creativity, feel good about yourself, and make other feel good about themselves. Keep up the great positive work!

You rock! I have Crohn-s as well and I remember being marked for one before being taken into surgery. And you give me confidence if I ever do need a bag

Note to editor: The music is too loud, I could barely hear her talking. It-s better to barely hear the music than have it overwhelm the entire story.

Wow good for her. People should never be ashamed of their medical condition.
She is happy and she has family support and that-s all you need.

I can't wait for the day that just like glasses, we see other medical objects as just more accessories that happen to serve a purpose.

I think there are far more people with these ostomy bags than people care to share. What she is doing is so fabulous and so needed.
reply

I like her confidence and wish her the best but if that were me I wouldn't be displaying it, I mean it isn't a fashion accessory.
reply

I really hope that one day we will be able to treat all autoimmune illnesses so no one will have to suffer a long term illness
