The most liberating thing I learned is I don't have to give detailed reasons. People have different values about what is worthy of making a decline. I'd love to, but I have a previous commitment.

I think it was Phoebe Buffay who once declined in a Friends episode saying oh, I really wish I wanted, but I dont . Lol. Not exactly polite, but definitely a very honest way of declining.
