English is really tricky. When I first heard the word pandemonium, I associated it with pantomime so I thought it had a meaning similar to silence, noiselessness however it has completely opposite meaning.
The meaning of have egg on face is quite logical though. Protesters hurl foods such as egg, tomato, milkshakes at politicians to embarrass and humiliate them.
