my Vietnamese teacher taught me hardly ONLY goes with when and no sooner ONLY goes with than, is that true? since it is clearly that in this video, hardly goes with both than and when

Hardly had I got home than the dog started barking?
Do this mean:
The dog started barking because I had hardly got home?
