How Intelligent Are Sharks? BBC Earth
video description
We're not intelligent! No sir.
Most definitely ain't the most intelligent entities ever to exist in this entire universe with advanced technologies beyond any human's inhibited comprehension.
We don't operate on an antisociety which has been proven time and again to be much more efficient than your pathetic society.
We don't have the technological capabilities to travel throughout the cosmos and to different universes, dimensions, realms, etc.
We most certainly don't originate from an entirely different galaxy nine quintillion lightyears away from here.
And we absolutely do NOT have the power and weaponry to wipe out humanity a quattuortrigintillion times over.
Nope. We're just a buncha fish. Nothing to see down here.

You really, REALLY need to go and read up on these things. What you said there is highly arrogant of some of the most amazing animals to have ever evolved. Sharks are highly intelligent, having smarts comparable to higher mammals, take care of our oceans by keeping the ecosystems in check, and almost never target humans as prey items. Indeed, what rights do we have on THEIR turf. If anything we should be irradiating the stubborn humans like yourself. What use do you have on this planet?

. None of this equals intelligence though. A species could evolve with only sight, hearing, and touch (completely dropping smell and taste as mostly useless senses for basic navigation) and be the most successful living species through actual intelligence like using tools and communication.
Humans are a good example- Our eyesight is decent, hearing is very limited, and our sense of smell is practically useless but because of our actual intelligence we have become the top species.

Well the problem is we can't realistically test any creature's true intelligence because it is so difficult to figure out if they really are thinking or just mimicking things they learn. Even teaching apes how to communicate doesn't guarantee that when they communicate emotions they aren't simply copying responses to emotion based question that they've experienced people give.
Nobody knows how smart a shark is, but I think they're probably as dumb as fish seem.

exactly. but just because an animal( or a fish in this case) can't talk or use tools doesn't mean they're un-intelligent. We're born with a set of skills( grasping things, use of a tongue to make noises. ie. babble. two legs to walk with. a brain that has an unlimited curiosity. we have to LEARN these skills. just like any other baby species. I wonder how many times a baby shark has made a mistake on it's prey and thought. shit. won't do that move again. :)

I don't think you realize what it is you are even saying.
Firstly, hydrofobia is not reserved to sharks only. Fear of water, therefore oceans, can also be the result of a near-drowning experience or other bad things which involves water.
Secondly, eradicating an ENTIRE species that has been a part of the food chain in the oceans for MILLIONS of years will have MAJOR impact on the ecological system which could have a vast amount of dire consequences.

Golfmaniac007: Sharks are not intelligent? You're crazy. In South Africa, seven Great Whites were observed working together to pull a nearly- beached whale out into deeper water so they could feed on it. It's also been proven that they remember individual humans, and how to do something when tested, even after not being tested for many months. The sea is the most extreme environment on earth, and you don't survive in it on instinct alone.

Are you a complete idiot I mean with out sharks their whole ecosystem will be affected and Sharks aren't the only thing in the ocean you should be afraid of i mean seriously. And can't you think of all we can can learn of these amazing creatures Example: There sixth sense Example: the design of their skin is unique and will someday be used to help people with Cancer. Plus they're Bad Ass.

To be a capable top predator, it often seems that intelligence is a requirement. All of the top land predators like big cats, canines, bears and hyenas are quite intelligent. Crocodilians are pretty smart for reptiles, and monitor lizards like komodo dragons are known for their intelligence as well. Even invertebrate predators like squid and octopus have the smarts needed to survive.

Exactly! Having highly acute senses does not imply intelligence.
Sharks are not as intelligent as people think. They will bite or attack anything out of curiosity hoping that its food. Their brain is also relatively small and is almost solely dedicated to senses and autonomic responses (which do not require thought/intelligence.
