A newborn cuckoo's instinct is to remove from its adopted nest any of the warbler's eggs. But more sinister is cuckoo's removal of the warbler's own newborn chick. Fascinating clip from the BBC's wildlife series Natural World

the fact that the bird doesnt seem alarmed at all about the fact that its watching the other eggs get thrown out of the nest. is motherhood for birds just one of those things mother birds try so much that losing a chick is THAT Meh worthy?

Unbelievable instinct. Even when blind they know that they have to throw the real egg or chick of the host mother so that he can live alone with the foster mother.

So from birth, it starts off as an imposter and a mass murderer. Hmmm. there's a movie script in here somewhere, I just know it.

Fun fact: a Cuckoo chick's call sounds like an entire nest full of the victim's chicks.
So it gets fed 4 times as often.

what happens if you put two cuckoo eggs in the nest and they hatch at the same time? will both of them force each other out?
reply

I'm confused, why doesn't the warbler mom just hatch her own goddamn chick instead of forcing it to be a little homicide baby?
