It's not a genetic response, poaching has brought down the numbers of big tusked elephants significantly. The elephants with no tusks or small tusks will therefore out number the big tusked elephants. If the ratio is 1: 6, then it reduces the chances of the big tusk genes being crossed together. On the other hand, the no tusk genes are crossed with no tusked gene more often, making the gene more dominant within the population. Another reason why it cannot be a genetic response to poaching is that the animal is too big to alter its genes over such a short amount of time to survive, if it were responding to a new hunter in the environment it wouldn't shed a tool that can help protect it from being hunted so it definitely has to do with reproduction among the population (as far as they know they could be hunted for food at random. Try crossing a big tusked male with a big tusked female (if big tusked females still exist) and see what happens. You are most likely going to get a big tusked offspring all the time.

Wanna end the poaching of animals for certain body parts forever? The solution is QUITE simple: Cut off of the poacher whichever body part they chopped off of the animal. I promise poaching would stop.
Kill an elephant for its ivory? Break all the poacher's teeth off at the gumline with pliers. Or instead of a clean break, just break them up in the poacher's mouth for him to swallow or spit out.
Cut off a rhino's horn? Sorry bud, but your nose will be evicted from your face. Take a gator's skin, or any other animals' pelt. well. not a good day for the poacher. About as good a day for them as the day that put them in that situation was for the animal.
Cut off a shark's fins for soup, then toss him back in the water to sink like a stone. lose your hands.
See? Simple fix.

Be vegan, avoid plastic use as much as you can, reduce food waste as much as you can, use less energy as much as you can. the world can't wait any more for us to finally use our empathy, moral reasoning, and rationality. We will kill ourselves and other species if we don't drop the ignorance now. Be aware of all your actions in life and how they impact others. PLEASE.

The Chinese eat everything and the more rare the species, the more they'll pay. It really sadness me how unaware most of the Chinese people are. All the beautiful animals are getting killed because they believe that these animals are medicines for them.

so, what happens if all elephants lose their tusks? Do we have no more tusked elephants anymore? Are we going to basically De-evolve elephants to having no tusks? that definitely needs to be avoided. may never have tusked elephants again.

Thank you for the message at the end! We need more of those. When we just see wildlife it seems everything is okay. Someone who doesn't deal with this, doesn't know how many rhinos or elephants are left.

Maybe include more efforts to boost the South African economy, then fewer people will want/need to turn to poaching to feed their families. Anyone who continues poaching after that, feed to the lions.

Most of the poaching is because there a lot of sick people that get their jollies off the ivory. When I read an article about a poacher that got eaten by lions. I laughed!

Nice documentary. Two things are much effective to stop poaching first provide sources of livelyhood and second educate them that are the back bone of ecosystem.

Poaching should have penalty of life prison.
I don't think that we're gonna save these animals. And after some years, there's will be no wild animal left.
