I am a narrowminded simeon descendent, and I don’t usually listen to unscripted content, but this came up on my feed and I must say I am thoroughly enjoying it. I don’t have anything substantive to contribute. I’m afraid. But I will say that I’m glad you exist. I’m glad we live in a time where we can have these conversations. I am blown away occasionally that I get to be here and now. Anyway.
Thank you!

To answer the (probably rhetorical) question in the thumbnail (I will listen when I have time): Sometimes! Sometimes science is not useful for hundreds of years and then all of a sudden it very much is.
Like Number Theory. It was mostly just a branch of math that was there to do neat party tricks.
And then along came cybersecurity and actually this number theory stuff is really useful!

Video uploaded 37 seconds ago, so anyone watching from the start is watching with me, hello all! lovin this podcast so, SO much. I feel like this is an excellent playlist to show someone who has barely any knowledge of Astrophysics on how interesting the cosmos is. Along with John asking some really good questions to probe Katie's knowledge lol.

This podcast, and this episode especially, illustrates the actual magic of humanity: that we all have a unique mind and perspective on the world around us. Our society values cold, hard, science, and diminishes the importance of the artistic/ emotional mind, but we all have access to some of both. We are all just little scientists and little poets.

I'm so glad there’s at least one more episode left! I have enjoyed this series so much that I was giving a tearful mental standing ovation by the end of this episode. I always end up feeling inspired and gleefully curious about life after listening. Thanks, John and Katie!

I'm thinking, no, science doesn't need to be useful, as long as it can be used for fun. My Newton's Cradle was built thanks to scientific advancements, but it serves no function on my desk. But when my cousin's kids come to visit, they both laugh when they use it.

My take is 'what is useful' It is not for us to decide what is and is not useful. It is information. Nothing more or less. It may be that something useful now is useless later and something useless now will have infinite use later.

The framing device is that 2 guys went camping sit on a chair and thensome stars decided to start discussing about astrophysics and they are just like whaaa
