I was 2 English credits short of graduation & workerd with a professor who was literally packing for vacation while we spoke. I had 3 days to put together something she felt worthy of 2 credits.
I wrote a 14 page paper on feminism in Frankenstein & the influence of Mary Wollstonecraft on Mary Shelley. It still astonishes me that such a deeply complicated concept was created by a teenage girl in direct response to a challenge by men in such a brief period. I don’t think just any talented writer could have developed the layers Shelley did. Both her parents had tremendous influence on her.
Much has been written about Wollstonecraft’s influence on Shelley but I’d love to have seen Wollstonecraft’s response to Frankenstein.

I was hoping for a longer full video, where the ideas of the different versions of modern feminist come from. Is trans entering female sports pro or anti feminist or should there be specific gender sports at all. Is there any way or form of solution that has been tried in more open-minded countries. What are the ways used and the most helpful way to get people to understand. This is a very large issue that people minimize for their convenience. The truth is I hear so much BS on this that I would really appreciate a full breakdown on what and why on the ideas of feminist.

Nice series!
For the next episode, the slogan surprised me cuz i have always said and done the other way around: think globally, act locally. Which in my opinion is a way of. saying think broadly and considering as much nuances and possible, and then implemented them by example in your everyday and local life. Thinking locally and act globally, since to me a bit colonialism, like kins od think in your local narrow world, and act imposing it to the rest of the global world, So I'm very curious and look very much forward for the next episode.

I would like to see a longer version of this as well.
The subject becomes so much more complex when we begin to realize that our entire economy and society is structured around the idea of the man getting paid and the women working at home for free. It will continue to funnel all the money and power to men until we can change our society, but it is difficult to know how to make things better. Maybe more funding for college should be available to women only, to help balance everything out.

The problem is these radical feminists are the majority that call themselves feminists and actively seek to destroy freedoms. Instead of advocating things like consensual adult services, they seek to ban them. They also spew non-sense like believe all women. They are even against a woman's right to defend herself because they are anti-self defense. The modern day feminist movement is just a communist front.

If we were to assign monetary value to the labor female family members perform in the household, who would bear the cost Would male family members be the ones obligated to pay Does this mean that familial relationships are, in essence, capitalist relationships Is my wife my worker Am I her boss What exactly is being said by calculating labor value of a woman's household work in terms of wages

I love the sections on intersectionality and how a lot of feminist movements have historically left entire groups of women out of their feminism, because this really isn’t talked about enough. I especially appreciate the opening example of a trans woman too, particularly given the current political climate. One day, feminism by default will include all women. I know I will fight for that day.

Essential gender features are needed to define exclusive rights. Eg the right to be part of a protected class. See Tickle versus Giggle terf battle, in the Australian High Court. The arguement is that oppression defines rights, not biology (which Foucault would have loved. But that's out in the real world, not the USA.

Why have gendered bathrooms Make them open to whoever needs to use them, and don't make them the compact stall rooms like we sometimes have. Have many separate rooms with a toilet and a sink behind a door. Then anyone can use it privately and there is no need to worry about who identifies as what. Just go.

Feminism helps men too by helping us see how we also suffer under patriarchy and how it impacts the ways we are allowed to feel, express, and operate in the world. Bell Hooks (who was also mentioned in the video, has done some great work in this area.
Great series and awesome video everyone.

4: 56 I don’t think anyone was ever saying that work didn’t have value. House work has to get done and it will never be paid regardless of who does it. Caveat is women have not had control of their finances until very recently and men were supposed to take care of the woman’s needs and wants.
reply

Radical feminism is in conflict with the 1st wave over equality because it often defines people by class identification instead of institutional rights. This had led to the tolerance of deluded gynocentric allies to double the movement which then led to female chauvanism (eg goddess worship)

Every person of conscious should Read Feminism is for Everybody and The Will to Change by bell hooks. The best books I've ever read about the topics at hand. Especially if you're a man read the Will to Change, incredibly insightful, incredibly useful and well researched.

idk if that minimum wage argument is that strong. Today I cleaned a bit, made myself some coffee and did some more house work. Just like women, I did this for myself and the people I live with. Should I charge myself or the people I live with for the coffee I made myself

Thanks for this insightful series, Crash Course team! I'd love to see sources added to a doc or even blurbs like the European History series. I'm hoping it's possible since you'll likely already have the bibliography for the series/each episode script!

As a person who has rather strong distaste for the modern feminist movement, this video convinced me to read some Bell Hooks. I think this video did a good job at highlighting the different perspectives within the feminist movement. Kudos!

All genders, regardless of how defined (biologically, culturally, psychologically, et al) should have equal rights. I don't mean this in the distractingly dismissive All lives matter way, but in an earnest, honest everyone matters way.
reply

i really appreciated this video! Its hard to discern what feminism is when everyone has their own ideas of it is and how to approach change. White women feminism kind of made it difficult to take it seriously as a movement.

I want the full episode!
What did you wanna talk about Lucy and from then until Mary Wollstonecraft
I wanna know! What are you holding back from us!
hehe, thanks for all the knowledge showcased though

reply

I, for one, think that women can think that I think that they think complex thoughts. And my thought right now is that more people should see this video, because feminism is often unfortunately misunderstood!
