Congressional Elections: Crash Course Government and Politics #6

This week Craig Benzine talks about the importance of elections. But he isn-t going to focus on presidential elections, but instead those of the strongest part of our government: congressional elections. Craig will talk about the frequency of elections in the Senate and House, typical characteristics of a candidate, and the motivating factors our congresspeople follow to get re-elected Andrew: The Presidential Term needs to be reformed to two 6 yr terms max. 4 years is not long enough for domestic AND foreign policy to have lasting effects. Presidential Election campaigns start within just 2 years of a result - and waste time and resources. Plus, campaigns are too long and too costly. So the campaigning time needs to be reduced drastically and set by law; and the amount that can be spent by, (or donated to, a campaign, needs to be reduced. And money paid to a President (and rest of Congress) needs to be drastically increased, to incentivize the very best talent from private sector to run for public office.

4: 20 to fight the incumbent there should be age limit that after the limit you have to take a test to prove that you are still capable of being in that position with something like a test that makes sure that they understand what is going on in congress and the states there should also be a limit on how many old people can be in congress witch should be less than 1/3 in my opinion to keep the new blood flowing unlike the current stagnant senate and congress which are un-moving an rigged in their ways

3: 29 american's should have vote dollar that can only be spent on the election and every person that is a united state citizen should have them this would help fight against lobbyist and candidates that in the eye's of the public are not good people or are questionable making it harder for company's and billionaires from pressuring the presidential candidates into taking -brides- to get elected while also making promises to that particular group that may not be in the interest of the people

The thing is members of congress don't have to be very responsive to voters if they live in safe districts and their only challenge is primaries where they have the incumbency advantage. Also, senators don't have to worry about doing stuff for reelection until the last 1 or two years before the election which I think is a good thing because it means they might think of the public good instead of reelection.

1: 28 The electoral system isn't that hard to understand (states muddy the process. What seems to be difficult is the reason for using the electoral college.
Democrats currently want to do away with it (saying it is outdated. >. >

The number of districts is constant. States gain or lose districts based on population which is determined by the census
