As a Colombian, if I had to choose between the two, I would go with fantasy, magical realism, and imaginative storytelling over gritty realism. Of course, in an ideal world, we would not have to choose at all. But it is genuinely sad, even tragic, how much of the market is dominated by narco stories and grimdark realism. That tone has become so pervasive that even many TV comedies feel weighed down by it.
I still remember when shows like Tentaciones were common, when strange or magical things could simply happen and no one felt the need to overexplain them. The suspension of disbelief remained intact because the narrative trusted the audience. There was space for wonder, for the uncanny, for stories that did not feel trapped by violence or social decay. I miss that atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the all-star cast (most of them non-Latine for some reason) couldn't rescue the terrible 1993 film adaptation of House of the Spirits (one of my favorite books of all time. I see there's a new Spanish-language adaptation; will have to check it out.

Back in one of Spanish classes in college, I had to do a timed 7 minute research presentation on the history of McOndo, but I got so wrapped up in its lore that with 2 minutes remaining I hadn’t even made it halfway through my notes

Appreciation for Crashcourse series like these. It blends Latin American history with current affairs all while we learn this through the large scope of literature. Certainly makes for interesting watches
