In which John Green explores F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel of the Jazz Age, The Great Gatsby. John introduces you to Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, Daisy and Tom Buchanan, and the other characters in the novel, and tries to look beyond the surface story to figure out what this thing is ABOUT. Set in the 1920's against a conflicted backdrop of prohibition and excess, The Great Gatsby takes a close look at the American Dream as it existed in Fitzgerald's time. It turns out, it had a lot to do with money and status, and it still does today. John will cover the rich symbolism of the novel, from the distant green light to the pale gold of wealth and decay. Also, Paris Hilton drops by. Turn on the captions. You'll like it

Ok, am I the only one who liked Daisy? She and Jordan were the only redeemable characters in the book to me. Nick especially was disturbing, he ENJOYED the war? That's f'ed up dude. And then Gatsby is kinda creepy, one thing that is burnt into my mind is him saying something along the lines of -I lust over her like a beast-. something about not being able to control his desire for her. The fact that he moved across the water from their house? And threw parties to bring her back? After all these years, it's kinda stalkery to me.

i had a big crush on Nick when I first read this novel, it was kinda wack. When I watched the movie with Tobey Maguire I lost the crush entirely, it was only towards the imagined version of him based on his narration and dialogue. A really great book that gave a me a very weird reaction lol

-All of these people share a creepy belief that if they just get the thing they want, that thing being a female human being, then they'll finally be happy. We have a word for this, its called objectification-. This is why John Green will forever be a legend.

He states that -Wealth- is the American dream, but he's missing a big point. It was the dream of the big city East Coast, and when Nick returns to the Midwest, he's also returning to the values of the Midwest and rejecting the values of the East Coast.

I remember reading the great gatsby and hating Daisy sooooo much and then realising she is a reflection of myself and everyone else. Youre supposed to hate her because she reflects humanity clinging to power and staus without care for others

My English teacher taught us that Nick is representative of the rising middle class and that he did actually go to war which is why he was drawn back to the Midwest cause the war was over

This reminds me of Canadian classic the Aprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz which which touches on the same themes and also is not about having likeable characters.
