In which John Green teaches you about the War of 1812. The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and its former colonial overlord England. It started in, you guessed it 1812. The war lasted until 1815, and it resolved very little. John will take you through the causes of the war, tell you a little bit about the fighting itself, and get into just why the US Army couldn't manage to make any progress invading Canada. And yes, Canadians, we're going to talk about the White House getting burned down. The upshot: no territory changed hands, and most of the other bones of contention were solved prior to the actual war. Although nothing much changed for the US and England, the Native Americans were the big losers. Tecumseh was killed, and the Indian tribes lost a lot of territory. Watch as John lays it all out for you. Also, check out #1812problems on

but, if we didnt win the war, wouldnt we have lost all that territory to the demands of the british? i dont think you can call it a win but we certainly did succeed in fending off the british and keeping our territory. we also made it so that we could trade freely. what i dont understand is why the british would instigate another war knowing they were already getting their asses handed to them by the french. they were in NO position to be testing other countries who wanted to remain neutral. ESPECIALLY the united states. i mean hello! it didnt work out so well for them last time. not only this but people keep saying the americans were trying to take over canada bla bla bla. the americans werent trying to take over canada. they werent at war with canada. they were trying to wage war on the british WHO WERE IN CANADA. what quarrels did we have with canada? we didnt have any. and are we just supposed to wait around for the british to charge into america? or are we going to meet the threat head on at the canadian border? the only reason this war didnt work out the way it should have for the americans was because james madison was sending incompetent generals and mostly militia men to fight in the beginning. but once he realized he couldnt win the war just on the backs of old grannies and country men, he finally put worthy generals and soldiers to work. because everybody knows a british general is poised and confident but he is still no match for the brute determination and cunning strategy of an american general. i wonder if you could ask a canadian if they had a chance to do it all over again, would they still choose the monarchy or would they choose FREEDOM? if madison had sent in worthy generals and soldiers into the war from the beginning, this war wouldve been a lot different. it wouldve been a shinning victory in our history instead of a discombobulated inconvenient truth

Great to cover a lot of bases, but it would've been nice for you to have invested a little more time into the veracity of the impressment claims. A great many historians today agree and acknowledge that the numbers were grossly inflated by hawkish politicians and newspapers of the day. In fact Madison's primary opponent who he ran against for the presidency was outspoken against these inflated claims, and sometime after the war, an English journalist (in the early 1830s I believe) went to Boston to ask around amongst the shipping magnates as to how many times they'd heard of impressment happening leading up to the outbreak of the war, and the number was exceedingly low.

Thank you for putting the -This Machine Kills Fascists- sticker on your laptop and always making it visible in these videos.
You do sometimes bend over backwards a little bit to have a balanced framing in some of these but this makes it clear you're doing that for appeal to a wider audience and beneath the centrist persona, you know what's up.

Have you ever been sick in Canada? It took my sister 10 months to be allowed a biopsy on a lump in her breast. Steven Crowder did the most accurate documentary I've seen on the reality of the day to day healthcare there - The current doctors, nurses, and receptionists, in thier own words.

In sixth grade, I binge-watched these videos for fun and scoffed at the high schoolers in the comments who had AP history tests in, like, two days. Anyways, guess what I have in two days.

Black people were not counted as 3/5 of a person, slaves were. To make slaves count as a whole person gives slave states more reps in the house. So no, it was not reasonable. 11: 12

No one caught the Bioshock Infinite reference at 7: 30? Excellent work there thoughtbubble. And I'm pretty sure this video came out around the same time the game released.

Parents and educators be forewarned: Time marker 8: 50 regarding George Cockburn, lewd adult humor has no place in a video meant for kids.
