In which John Green ACTUALLY teaches about the Civil War. In part one of our two part look at the US Civil War, John looks into the causes of the war, and the motivations of the individuals who went to war. The overarching causes and the individual motivations were not always the same, you see. John also looks into why the North won, and whether that outcome was inevitable. The North's industrial and population advantages are examined, as are the problems of the Confederacy, including its need to build a nation at the same time it was fighting a war. As usual, John doesn't get much into the actual battle by battle breakdown. He does talk a little about the overarching strategy that won the war, and Grant's plan to just overwhelm the South with numbers. Grant took a lot of losses in the latter days of the war, but in the end, it did lead to the surrender of the South. If you want to

I hope you don't mind failing your finals. John green your history sucks, but what do you expect. Maybe you should stick to your strong suit, fantasy, like this video. You can't make a stand like that with all the historical evidence to back up that the civil war was over much more than just slavery. Look at Lincoln's letter to Congress on July 4th 1860. It clearly states that he was merely trying to collect the revenue. Not to mention the Morrill Tarriff act, and others before it. For years the North exploited the south through taxation. And your obviously not giving all the facts about the nullification crises and only using the ones that suit your cause. You failed to mention that the war almost broke out when the US government threatened to use the military but the issue was resolved by a compromise that lowered the amount of taxes the north wanted. John Green you are a fake historian and fail to give the whole truth. You just like to use whatever suits your motives by selecting what you want people to see and leaving out the rest of the details

Head to head, Grant inflicted more casualties upon Lee-s forces than Lee inflicted on Grant-s forces. Grant was a better General than Lee, as Grant knew how to successfully launch an invasion (Siege of Vicksburg, Petersburg, Richmond, etc) Lee-s two invasions into the United States were unsuccessful by any measure. Grant-s generals who served under him were at least as good as any of the rebel generals. To simply say that the Rebels had better generals than the United States is simply wrong. Can it be said that particular generals weren-t as good as others (I. e. Lee was better than Pope? Yes. Definitely.

3: 20 The civil war started as a culmination of all the events that were stated just before 3: 20. It didn-t start sooner because it didn-t. It-s like saying why didn-t she have her baby in 7 months instead of 9. Fuzzy logic. Slavery was an issue but the south succeeded because the north was oppressing them with taxes and tariffs. Add in taking away free labor, they crushed the south economically. It would have been interesting to see if Lincoln could have ended the war without a shot if he would have offered to end the unjust taxes and tariffs in trade for freedom of slaves to work for wages.

This man is an idiot. Anti-American and bashing the civil was and Lincoln. Without Lincoln Obama never would have become president. The Civil War was extremely important for our country and he bashes everything about the Union winning. HOW is HE not racist? We complain of racism in our country yet HE is being used to tech our kids? Horrible! Absolutely HORRENDOUS garbage! Stick to the facts and leave your opinion out of it buddy!

My only comment is that 1860 upper Canada was trying to convince the maritime provinces to join the dominion and they rejected it because it meant a loss of sovereignty.
In fact eastern -Canada- supported the south BECAUSE it feared it's loss of sovereignty.
My guess is that was the root cause - the south didn't want to join the north because it meant a loss of its own governance.

Southern rebels knew, according to their written correspondence, that they were fighting to preserve the institution of slavery. Sure, the rhetoric was typically, -We are fighting for our rights! -. but they knew that they fought for the right to preserve slavery, the foundation of their economy.

It is overly simplified to say that the war was about slavery. It was not. Even your quote of Lincoln exposes that the war was not all about slavery Slavery was a part of the war, but not the reason for the war.

Why is this the second civil war video I've tried to watch where the narrator doesn't take pauses between sentences. Seriously? I'm having trouble keeping calm. PAUSE. Sigh. PAUSE. Pauses are not a bad thing.

Did he just contradict himself by saying the south was doing well and the north was not doing well soooo the union invaded the south and lincoln slapped slavery in there so ppl can go with him.
