So we've been talking about civil rights for the last few episodes now, and we're finally going to wrap this discussion up with the rather controversial topic of affirmative action. We'll explain what exactly affirmative action is, who it is for, and why it still exists. Now, affirmative action is a pretty problematic concept. So we'll get into the court's rationalization for it in the 70s as well as its fall from favor in more recent years. Now, people tend to have pretty strong, and varying opinions, about this stuff - so we'll start talking about how these opinions are informed next week when we start our discussion on politics

Poor people, who are often black and Hispanic, often do not have the same opportunities as someone who is middle class or upper class who's parents can afford to hire them tutors, an exam book, or even a class. They can't afford to go to summer camps, do those fancy rich people sports like rowing that get you into ivy schools, private music lessons. Not to mention the priceless advantage and advice a college educated parent can provide to their child. What extracurricular to take, how many AP's, etc. Some of the AA student's parents are possibly clueless on the college process. All of these things contribute to an advantage, believe it or not. You also don't get the advantage of mental stimulation and growth from travelling, vacations, going to museums, showing and pointing explaining to your child what something is or how it works, READING TO THEM AT HOME, daycare etc. This is why first generation college students are at a disadvantage. In many low income neighborhoods, again, mostly black and Hispanic, though some do and really do try their best, do not emphasize education or hold it highly like in many Asian cultures. I do believe they discriminate Asians today, much like they discriminated against Jew students that excelled in school. They are the new Jewish students. This is especially true in ivy league schools. I think it should be based on socioeconomic status, not race. It is not fair to choose the less impressive Hispanic student over the white student that is much more impressive to the school when they have the same socioeconomic background. But then again, some have the advantage of being free individuals for centuries, while others were slaves and were discriminated against even up to the 70s, which was honestly not long ago. That is some guilt right there.

I have a new boss at work.
She earned her position.
NOT BY AFFIRMITIVE ACTION.
But by HER actions.
She worked hard
She set the standards on the department.
She was the best at what she did
She desired to be the manager.
She learned her trade
She developed her skills
She earned it.
LIBERAL GOVERNMENT DIDNT DO THIS FOR HER.
She did it for herself.
END ALL DISCRIMINATION.
how can Liberals use A A to fix
Black people from having 70% single mothers.
How many black children have 2 black parents in the same house?
HOW ARE THOSE PROBLEMS
Caused by so called WHITE PRIVILEGE?
ITS NOT!
Its called foolish selfish culture.
WHITE PEOPLE HAVE THAT PROBLEM TOO.

I have mixed feelings about Affirmative Action. I mean I get it. Providing equal opportunity to minorities. And I am a minority. But at the same time you're favoring one set of characteristics over another which leads to a whole new set of discrimination. And as far as righting past wrongs or paying reparations. that's a very slippery slope. I mean how do you know when you've paid your debt? Not to mention there are those who will continually prey upon your past transgressions if you let them.

I think affirmative action was needed back then because there were many people in the college that would deny people due to the color of their skin. So if they had these rules in place it would help more POC get into college. But he did make a good point that people don-t want to abolish these practices because they want more support for POC who still have lesser chances of getting into college.

Inaccurate propaganda piece. AA was started in 1961 by JFK. It was intended for Black Men only because they weren't being given equal opps for Contractors jobs. LBJ would later add Women as another group that could make similar discrimination claims. That's when White Women took full advantage and stole most AA benefits then thru the current day. Feminists never mentions this.

My other issue with Affirmative Action is this idea of forced diversity. Yes segregation is bad and yes I would love to see more representation of minorities. But I want it to happen naturally. And it should happen naturally. I don't mind a little push in the right direction but I feel like overtime it's gonna do more harm than good to force people to integrate.

The easy, most effective solution is this: don't make ANY laws that discriminate against race, address America's past racism and that it was wrong, but don't make white people who disagree (at least like, 99. 9% of whites disagree with those past acts and racist laws) suffer for their ancestors mistakes.

I think there is Alot of reverse discrimination going on these days. Alot if places I go to have an entire staff of -one- race and it isn't White or Black or Filipino. So I don't know if it's the Hiring Manager or whoever but when you see this it makes you wonder how they are getting away with that. --

Skin color should never be a factor when applying to a college. It is all about intellectual abilities. And if most of the smart students happens to be Asian or white, that is not their problem. So seriously, get rid of affirmative action rn

I don't think colleges should even care about what there skin color is why don't we help children of all races who have less money and less opportunities instead of basing It on race because there are very well off minorities
