So far in this series, we've covered a lot of war, disease, climate disaster, and some more war. Well, prepare yourself for something a little more positive. This week, we're talking about the Enlightenment. In this video, you'll learn about the ideas of Voltaire, Rousseau, Montesquieu, Kant, Smith, Hume, and a bunch of other people whose ideas have been so impactful, they still influence the way we think about the world today

-Most of us know, now, that Rousseau was wrong: that man, when you knock his chains off, sets up the death camps. Soon we shall know everything the 18th century didn't know, and nothing it did, and it will be hard to live with us. - -Randall Jarrell
The truth about humans is that we will not remember the entirety of someone's work. It is only little snippets that become famous and have an impact. Rousseau's -man is born free and everywhere he is in chains- did indeed plant the seeds of dictatorial states. That's because his thoughts on individual thought are not remembered very well. You could say the first line of -The Social Contract- turned out to be a viable seed while Rousseau's valuing of individual thought was not.

THANK YOU. I've had enough of either ultraconservative people or nihilists, often ecologist nuts, grumbling about the world being rotten and doomed and wanting to go back to -better times-.
Those times were not better. The world of today might be deeply flawed, but it's far from completely doomed. And as a fan of history, although I enjoy studying the past, I wouldn't want to live in it. Understanding the past also means not being stuck in it, or rather in some idealized vision of a past that never existed.

Honestly you made me tilt on your pronunciation of encyclopedie. Not because it was bad but because when you said it in english it sounded more french to me especially on that first syllable.
But damn i love to watch your video. Well made and interesting. Thank you for your work.

-You. Wait a minute there John. If we shouldn't go back before 2003, how the hell am I going to go back to when All Stars by Smash Mouth was released in 1999? I hope my ears are wrong.

I really appreciate the calm tone of this series. Crash Course is as educational as ever, but now easier to watch and follow. Thanks for great educational content!
