For many of the combatants, the homefront and the warfront were one and the same. The war disrupted life for millions upon millions of people. You'll learn about the different experiences of the populations of various combatant states. In other news, we've partnered with Arizona State University for a new bunch of video series! So, what utopia have you been talking about? What heaven have you been talking about? Have any of you had some courage to investigate the darkest aspects of modern life? There is no civilization in any part of this world. Where is the civilized world? Have you ever seen a civilized world that is rational, given all of these irrational and senseless wars? In fact, any time you talk about utopia, you just create a dystopia with your own hands. Anytime, you talk about Heaven, you create a Hell with your own hands. I will never again believe your lies, your fabrications, your brainwashing, and your propaganda. In fact, you are not capable of being honest with yourself and with others. You are very well unethical, immoral, and deceptive. You need to look at the most tragic moments in human history given the dehumanization process of all conflicts and wars. You are not able to live in peace in this world. Anytime you say you are making progress, you are, in fact, working to take the most regressive measures you can possibly take. This aspect of the darker reality is so sad and so depressing, but it is all so true. You cannot continue to be a blind optimist, given the darkest realities that you construct with your own hands, your own mind, your own science, your own applied mathematics, your own religion, your own art, your own dreams, your own magic and imagination. You use science to justify wars. You use applied mathematics to justify wars. You use art to justify wars. You use dreams to justify wars. You use magic to justify wars. Every part of your reality leads to wars. You do not know peace and progress, nor do you have the ability to make peace and progress.

There is that nagging fact that objectively evil acts are committed by those who consider themselves to be (or desire to thought of as) the good guys. It should make us all second guess ourselves and what kind of world it is to which we contribute our efforts. Yeah, Hitler stopping production of protective equipment just as his front line troops were in need of it. There must be some analogy in current events. No one knows how widespread or isolated the incidence of cannibalism was during the siege of Leningrad. Suppose we should be glad Putin's parents somehow made it out. Spent a great time in Leningrad as it changed its name once again to St. Petersburg. Was told by several survivors heroic stories of tanks driving out of factories straight into battle and artillery shells being fired at the Germans as they came off the production line.

The Golden Bear winning Bengali film 'Ashani Sanket' (Distant Thunder) directed by Satyajit Ray is set during the Bengal Famine. In the film as the people are starving and growing desperate for food, the nature is depicted in its full glory showing that the famine was indeed man made and not natural. It is a wonderful film.

Help CrashCourse! I have a burning historical question that I can't find the answer to ANYWHERE! I am a huge fan of Norse history and really want to know if the Vikings named their ships and if they had a naming ceremony but I can't find any credible answers. Please help me solve this mystery!

-Famines on that scale are almost never natural and are almost always inflicted by humans on each other-. It reminds me of the famine in China around 1960. Sadly the actual death figure was never revealed to public, and the cause of it was said to be -natural disaster- by our government.

Hey I love all the courses here, I just wanted to tell you to maybe not use the word demented like it was used here? It's a specific word that is connected to mental health problems, using it as a negative characterization of sth is problematic and probably ableistic.

This view of the bengal famine is ridiculous, it was a natural famine and to not use ships to resupply was a tactical decision. its easy to say now it was wrong but its different if instead japan would have won.

Somehow you manage to lift my soul from the fact we are all one and we can overcome and yet punch my heart black and blue from telling the truth or the other way around or both and then both again.
