U said they dont bite? Arent these the things that annihilate u with endless bites at night in the sand? Everyone calls those biting pests sand fleas. R these a different kind? .that bite and eat eachother, but NOT people?
I just read something that said biting sandfleas are crustaceans that normally feed on washed up dead and rotting plant material, and unintentionally bite people when they land on them. So these ARE the ones that destroy ur legs at the beach!

These things always freaked me out. I went to college in Santa Barbara and these would be covering the sandy shore of the beaches at night. I had no idea what they were and I named them shrimp termites. For sure not a pleasant experience while trying to enjoy an evening walk on the beach.

I get a prickly looking rash on my legs every time I go to the beach and was always told it was bites from sand fleas. Doesn't matter which beach in the USA I still get prickly looking rash on my legs. I never go in farther then my legs.

I thought they were isopods but they aren't at all. They are actually more like krill rather than pill bugs.
Dang my eyes fooled me again. Plus thanks for the deep look like.

they can be eaten, but first they need to be soaked in fresh water for a few hours and then lemon or lime juice overnight and then cooked. If done right they taste all right

I am looking for this when I was a kid under stones but our home is not near any beach, is there other species of this crustacean that lives not near beaches?

I was thinking of how cute these critters are. until I came to the part where I'm told they sometimes eat each other.

Since they look for shadowy blobs for food then does that mean they would try to eat a dark colored towel
