The History of New Zealand begins in the Middle Ages, when humans first arrived in the form of the Polynesian explorer Kupe. New Zealand was the last significant land mass on Earth to be settled by humans. The following five centuries saw the development of what became the Maori culture. The first European to sight the islands was Abel Tasman in 1642, but it was Cook in 1769 that thoroughly mapped the islands, leading the way for the first European settlers in the following decades

Total unsubstantiated conjecture.
The only substantial evidence used in this presentation pertains to a time after European discovery.
Carbon dating systems for establishing a time frame are not presented here making the entire presentation questionable.
Verbal history is used to establish an earlier record but every other verbal history that has used it has allays backed it up by carbon dating.
There is very good verbal history to establish that the country was inhabited by humans and they were eaten to extinction except for a few out laying islands.
There is little doubt that extensive carbon dating was carried out.
Making no mention of carbon dating may indicate a deliberate intention to deceive.
The Korean language did not have a written language so they use the Chinese written language. It is very likely that the Maori migrants would have brought some evidence of this with them.
There are other discoveries of ancient migrations to New Zealand that have been presented in media.
So if part is false through omitting information then all the presentation is questioned.

Bloody good history lesson. My ancestors are both Maori and English/Irish/Scottish. Maori ancestor was the Chief who brought his canoe in at Kawhia, on the West Coast of the Nth Island. Further along his line was the first Maori King Te Whero Whero and his son Tawhio (Tainui Tribe) who went to England to visit the Queen. (Victoria I think. She didn't see him though and he returned. He was a peaceful Leader and not well-liked by many Maori because of that. I have a family tree showing this, although it's quite hard to read. My Fathers side is Irish Scotts, and they both settled in Blackball where the first Labour Party was formed (coal mining. Grandad came to NZ from Scotland at the age of 18yrs, and Grandma of Irish descent was a 2nd generation. So I am 4th Gen on Dads side, and I would have to go throught he family tree to see what generation I am from Mums side. I could see the Maori features in. my Nana, but if you looked at me, I look white. My kids however are more noticeably Maori due to my husband having more a maori father (of Tanui descent) and an his mother of English descent.

Great video! I do think the coverage of rogernomics could have been more clear. The reforms were not clearly communicated to the public prior to the election.
Even the PM Lange was seemingly unaware of the pure scale of the reforms, and in retrospect has said that it was very much a project of roger douglas.
Douglas left labour and went on to form his own libertarian party. The logic for roger douglas's labour membership seemed to be that national was too deeply conservative for such a large scale reform programme. Especially in the Muldoon era.
The documentary -Revolution- 1999 is probably the most complete visual history of that period. Well worth a watch if ur interested!

Talk about rewriting of History and narrative
I listened to Dover Samuel MP one night on TalkBack, he shared a far different account of our history starting with when the Maori came to New Zealand, he then he told us to watch a TV documentary made my Maori about Maori
Is is called Skeletons in the Cupboard
Why is this History not taught instead of the spin we are all fed, it might stop a lot of social disharmony the young Maori feel by not being informed of our true history not the watered down woke fantasy portrayed to the World.
I proudly a Kiwi with Maori blood in my family so tell us worts and all our history and leave the sanitised bulldust out of it!

Genocide and theft of land is still Genocide and theft. Doesn't matter wether you need recorded history because of your lack of memory. Maori had wars yes just like Europeans. Your calm explanation of your interpretation of what happened in New Zealand is lies and was carried out with Brutality, Racism and ignorance to anything Maori. Maori were forced into selling land or sold by Maori lap dogs coerced by greed and the reliable device a conquer, all masked with lies and enforced by laws to ensure white Racism and leadership will and still does to this day keep Maori under white racist rule.

I took a look at New Zealand's list of Prime Ministers and not a single one belonged to the group that first arrived to that land. Can you think of any representative of any country entering England with the intention of dominate it? Of course, nowadays it makes no sense at all, but that's the difference. British representatives left their land to dominate whatever piece of land they could and whoever would be there. With a pistol in hand, the British gentleman would say: -I give you the right to live if you entirely submit to my powers-. And that he would call democracy and Christianity.

Maori oral history speaks much about the patupaiarehe, torehu and moriori who arrived here much earlier but were -resettled' to the chatham islands, enslaved, or eaten, and eliminated much like genocide. You neglected to mention the intertribal conflicts, prior to captain james cook making contact in 1769, where more maori died by their own hand than ww1, ww2, korean war, vietnam, and malaysia combined. If you are factly concious about the conflicts in NZ you need to approach them in conext. eg massacre of marion dufresne, passengers and crew of the Boyd.

Lies mixed in with a little truth portrayed as a virtuous white endeavor bringing peace and calming to a violent world of natives. Just like the rape and pillage of Scotland? Ireland just a continuation of Rome against The Germans England. Evil lies and look how you have treated the world Africa, Muslim countries Arabic countries, all the people of God and now! You want children to hate their parents and Christians then it will be every other religion or faith in God.

Great video but no mention of the first people here, the Maori Ori. They're usually over looked in New Zealand history as people skip straight to the Maori immigration from the Pacific Islands. If you are going to talk about New Zealand history, start at the start and don't forget like everyone else how the Maori would eat the brains of people they had killed for their mana.

I believe that the discovery of gold in the South Island and the massive discovery of the Hauraki Gold Field led to a substantial increase in wealth and migrants because where there is money, there is oportunity. Gold in Australia resulted in an influx of settlers such that by 1900, Sydney had the same population as Paris.
reply

As an Asian Kiwi, it would have been nice if you touched on the waves of immigration into NZ from other parts of the world. The 1860s gold rush of NZ is quite interesting. Post-WW2 migration would also be nice to touch upon. This would make for a more comprehensive representation of NZ history.
reply

If you're a Kiwi, I'd love to hear of the story of how you or your ancestors arrived on this far side of the world, or if you're Maori, which tribe are you descended from?

My people were here before kupe got here. kupe speaks of them when he returned home. Alot of what you say on this video is wrong. We have been here for thousands of years. I find your video to be offensive to me and my people.

i think by visiting NZ twice ive more or less covered most of whats on your 2 presentations. My only regrets were not visiting stewart island and not going to watch a rugby match (i was offered a ticket, but turned it down)

I cringe so hard when non-kiwis call The North/South Island just 'South Island' or 'North Island', it is and always is THE North/South Island. I understand why its a common mistake though, made it harder to watch the video ngl

I been here 16 yrs and it used to be that the Maori's did not own the land they were just guardians. There is also evidence of pre-Maori settlements and structures. Which we are not allowed to visit or talk about! Go figure.
reply

The name -Maori- was applied to the indigenous people of Aotearoa pre European colonisation. the indigenous people of this whenua weren't only of Polynesian decent. the cultural history of this land goes back way further.

Maori slavery still occurs today. If you look closely at businesses in NZ today, Maori are restricted to low paying jobs. If you we're noy their, you are guessing. What was written by caucasians is rubbish.
reply

seeing people talk about nz is quite funny as we aren't talked about much and aren't even put on alot of maps and i have to say you did pretty well with your pronunciation
reply

Not so sure our history has anything to do with what we have been told. Look at the Tartarian buildings and tell me the early settlers and / or Maori built them. Yeah nah

As a New Zealander, you're missing that Scandinavian long ships have been found in the Catlins, an area of the lower east coast. There is no evidence of settling though.

The Maoriori were in New Zealand before the Maori. The were annihilated by the Maori, the last of them died early 1900's. Why are they never mentioned?
