Make your own Coilgun Yves: That is cool.
I suck at analog electronics so here's how mine is going to work:
And thanks for the schematics btw.
For any given projectile one could tune the coil firing like this:
Optimise the 1st on time to impart the maximum amount of enery to the projectile.
This might need distance measuring or with a radar or anothe coil could be done electronically.
Once this is maximized, then set the firing of the second coil and on time so as to further maximize the projectile's energy (measured by either its speed, or distance traveled.
If you have more coils, then repeat the process.
Hint: we know that each subsequent coil will be on for a shorter period as the projectile travels at a higher speed through it.
IF you have enought battery energy, then you can turn all the coil on at the same time and only worry bout the off timing.
Also to recycle some energy, you can recapture the magnetic field collaps in a cap and reuse that.

dont use just a freewheel diode.
add either a resistor in series, or a neon bulb.
your magnetic field will collapse several orders of magnitude faster.
a resistor will require scoping to select the ideal value and not blow your fet.
a neon you know breaks down at 60-90v or so. thats the max spike you will get. you can use several and still stay safe.
what? didnt anyone tell you that a freewheel diodes purpose is to allow current to KEEP flowing in the coil?
you want the field to collapse instantly. unfortunately, an infinitely short collapse via an infinite resistance makes an infinitely high voltage.
letting the spike hit 500v (i only use 600v+ FETs) causes it to collapse much faster than through a diode drop of 0. 6v.
one simple component change and thinking about the physics correctly will make all the difference.

Coil gun or rail gun. Same thing. More coils and higher amperage for more penetration and make it with a 555 timers monostable or the other one to trip other 555 timers in series for more power and speed for severe penetration. Charged capicitor banks in large capacity can go along way.

Is it possible to detect changes in current drawn from the coil and turn it off when current is at a peak or something like that? Since the light sensor requires a larger then coil projectile and using predetermined timing is a hustle every time an upgrade to the coil count is made.

Soooo are coilguns and railguns the same thing? This is really important for me to know as a halo fan. Am I not even making my enemy explode if I use that weapon? Is it just fireing a big chunk of metal?

Hi, Can you please elaborate on the MOSFET driver. Why adding this extra IC makes things faster? It is still the Arduino that sends the stop command (based the optical sensor, so I am a bit confused.

Ok. So I tried with 5V and 15A (I did not have 12A) and after 20 seconds the plastic tube of my coil started melting. So this voltage and current should not used for over 5 seconds!

I cannot find irs2001 driver in our country or tc4422 /mic4422. is there any other driver ic to drive this MOSFET or is there any other diy way to build driver for this MOSFET.

Rip Windows 7. ?
Microsoft adds an upgrade to Windows 7 just for installing a custom version of Edge. (Based in Chromium/Chrome)

If the size and position of the projectile is a known, you don't need any kind of feedback, just a potentiometer to adjust the delay.
