Don't think of any germanic tribes as a nation they were mainly bands of viking hoardes that spread out over a huge area and diluted into very different tribes from each other. Although still considered barbaric they were great military people and merchants that are responsible for much of the best ports and trading routes still in use today

You have to have respect for the romans. When everhyone else was terrified and fleeing the huns, the Romans stood their ground and fought. They had no choice. They may have had a chance if all these tribes realized they could do better if they worked with the romans instead of invading their territory and capturing their cities
