Ibn Battuta: The Greatest Traveller in History? neya: I am a Filipino and I am proud that he visited our country.
Ibn Battuta passed by the Philippines when he was going to China. He met with Princess Urduja a leader of Kinalakian tribe of warrior women.
If Ibn Battuta was alive, I would want to thank him because a lot of our history was erased when the Spaniards invaded the Philippines in 1521. When Filipinos think of how our history started all we know is the fight between Magellan and Lapu Lapu. It was never how our pre-Spanish Filipinos live. Most of the accounts of our history did not live. Now we, Filipinos, has now suffered a lot finding our own identity because we spent 300 years under Spanish rule. Ibn Battuta gave us one of the account of how the Filipinos lived in an untouched land. He gave us Princess Urduja. A fierceless warrior. He described her as a brave, wise and strong. He was welcomed by her and laid such wonderful food but he said he cant eat any food prepared by 'kafir' or non believer. Princess Urduja appreared and spoke the Arabic language. He was baffled at how could someone across the sea far from his homeland speak of his language. Princess Urduja told him her tribe he visited are Muslimsand she spoke of the Qur'an to which Ibn Battuta was pleased and finally ate.
It brings me great joy that he gave us a piece of our history. He gave us a piece of Filipino identity. I wish Ibn Battuta was in our history subjects in school.

Ibn Battuta is a native born of my city Tangier, he is the pride of the city, yet it is a shame his grave is located in an empty room in one of the oldest neighborhoods, a room that does not receive any governmental or local attention, I guess tyrannic regimes fear such historical figures which will spark the trait of freedom in the people. He isn't celebrated as much as he is in other places in the world such as china, but we Moroccans and citizens of Tangier hold Ibn Battuta highly as one of the emblems of Moroccan history who represents the brave and adventurous spirit of all Moroccans.

O Arabised people of North-Africa, stop appropriating Amazigh personalities, Ibn Battutta was an Amazigh and will always remain Amazigh, he used Arabic like he used English, nowadays, at this time Arabic was an international language, Ibn Battutta was not Arabic was not mixed he was purely Amazigh, he comes from the Luwata tribe, and even his last name Battutta maybe comes from the Ibettoyen or Ibeqqoyen, who are know to be known seafarers and pirates, again o Arabised Moroccans do not spread lies about Imazighen, do not appropriate our Amazigh inventors, engineers, and explorers

Even more impressive is that he left his keys in Baghdad and had to walk all the back to retrieve them, but by the time he got there his keys had already been taken to a lost and found in Armenia. After arguing for about 45 minutes with the Armenian lost and found keeper he got his keys back and bartered for a pack of Newport 100s and 12 oz bottle of Hennessy before heading to Phangoria to take a ship back to Tangier, but the ship got lost and took him up river to Oslo by mistake.

Good video, I acquired his book in Morocco, the Arabic version, his own words, I'm about 2 chapters in and already fascinated by his detailed description of every place he visited, and the beautiful style he writes in, I've noticed how respectful he is, to the way he describes these cites and villages, and his visit to each one of them to meet their rulers, scholars and judges, it also strikes me, how he describes the level of people's generosity at the time.

He has come to my hometown. He has lived in my country for a long time. Iam from Malabar, Kerala, south india. He wrote a lot about our home country malabar. The Zamorin, the then king, gave him a special house in the palace. The first mosque in South Asia is in my state. There is a book about him in the madrassa and goverment school

Ibn Battuta wrote of how most of the city of Constantinople was not being used and was just a playground of crime, and he wrote of how his clothing was more noble than the emperors, and this is one of the main texts that help us understand what Constantinople was like after the fourth crusade as the Byzantines stopped writing.

Marco Polo's route was much more interesting given how much of China he saw and the fact he rubbed shoulders with the actual freaking Chinese emperor. Ibn Battuta got to China and was scared because for the first time he had to be around a lot of non Muslims. That doesn't sound like a good explorer to me.

Thanks for the video. i never heard of this great travellor. Hope we get much more in depth coverage of his vast travels of the known world. Unfortunately only Marco polo was made famous by west. Ibn Battuta deserves much respect. keep it up and one day a movie in honor of him must be made.

The man was by no means an explorer though, he liked the beaten path, ideally traveled them in style, and no amount of humility lessons stuck with him. He was the quintessential tourist.
