The Real Rollo & the Foundation of Normandy Sheila: So am I to understand that my great great great grandmother Matilda is related to this weird Rollo guy? Please say no! Matildas son Henry the first was very brave he was 26 years old when he came to England meanwhile one of our cousins Stephen ruled England for 26 years and allowed the barons to slaughter one another my DNA shows I am 30% French from Normandy but I am also English Scottish etc. this is my mother side my husband and I are 8th cousins via European royalty his name is Dr. Bruce Clyde Hunter yes hes a descendent of Robert the Bruce house of Hunter house of Stewart and house of Clyde both of us are descendants of Eleanor of Castile etc. the Plantagenets ruled England initially and created a monetary system in parliament there was law and order for the most part and peace throughout the land for hundreds of years-then of course you have Tudors etc. but all of us anyone that can claim any kind of direct descendent legitimate or otherwise to King Edward the first or James the first or Mary Queen of Scots share similar common ancestors. My husband and I are legitimate Descendants of all of them. Her Majesty the Queen Queen Elizabeth II also is a descendent of the same kings and queens. Genealogy is fascinating I love it!

Archeological researches stated that there were more Saxons and far more Frankish and Gaulish people in Normandy than Danish. William the conqueror was only a tenth Danish. It is because the King of France was clever to grant these few Vikings land in order to stop further Viking invasions. This is why in 1066 they were a very tiny number of Normans from Danish ancestry. The Vikings failed to settle in everywhere else in France. They were constantly beaten. It is only because of the geography of the Seine River that the King allowed the Vikings to settle and defend the low Seine Valley. And this why there are more people bearing my name in England than in France ( I am french) and I have zero link with Normandy. All names with the ey or ay ay the end are from Normandy. But it has nothing to do with Denmark. Sorry!
BTW the Anglo Saxons beat the shit out of the Vikings. They killed Ragnar Lobrok. This so called strength of the Vikings is a myth. The Anglo Saxon, the Franks, the other people living in Britain and France were stronger. What the Vikings did was only pillaging and flee as quick as possible. They were absolutely garbage on ground.

Is there anyone here with good history of Normandy, I am wanting to know about the house of Fitz John of Normandy, My ancestory goes back to there. Our family then with William the conquer to England, they are within the tapstary, at somestage we went to Scotland, we are also Celtic. Eventually leaving and ggt grandparents changed their name fron Johnson to Johnstone (they didn't want to be confused with Englishmen in their new land) we have heard Normandy mentioned alot in History, but not so much of the people, I may never know who these Ancestors are, But it has been recorded from England we were from House of Fitz John. I am curious to know what the house meant.

The Normans had no connection to the Scandinavians, what so ever. In fact the Normans where the arch enemies of the Scandinavians. Dudo of St. Quentin is not regarded as trustworthy. The Normans were simply Romano-French bastards who invented fraudulent Norse genealogies as a desperate attempt to hide their own shameful ancestry. They similarly invented a scheme to marry according to Danish custom solely as a sneaky way to legitimize their unlawful engagements. The Normans got their name after taking possession of the territories north of Maine and Le Mans.

Charlemagne was crowned as the Roman emperor by the Pope, as the Pope Leo III saw the position of emperor of Rome vacant because of Irene of Athens being seen as illegitimate because she was a woman. Otto the first was technically the first Frankish King to hold the title of Holy Roman Emperor.

I have been researching my ancestry and managed to trace it through historical records to Rollo. My eldest son, despite being the son of an archaeologist, hasnt been interested in history until I showed him my research. Now hes been listening to this with considerable interest. Finally!

But vikings back in those days didn't think Norway/Denmark/Sweden. Even after Harald Fairhair there was no Norway until long after. I think vikings saw themselves as vikings (not by word but culture) and therefore Danish Swedish Norwegian didn't matter because it didn't exist.

When I learned about ganga-hrolf (walking-Rolf) in public school, they told he was a sheep/cattle thief and banned from the land. As most people having issues with the law, they often got the idea going viking. He certainly made a good career for himself.
reply

Rollo was so tall that while mounted on a horse his feet touched the ground and he appeared to be walking. hence the name Ganger Hrolf ( walking Rolf. Harold Bluetooth ate so many blueberries that his teeth were blue. hence the name BLUETOOTH!

My mother's ancestors were from Rouen, there is a good chance the I am related to Rollo, through her ancestor, the Earl of Talbot. Recently, my Ancestry DNA has been revised to say that I have ancestry in Scotland. Rollo's Scot descendants?

I would love to find out my Rollo heritage but no clue where to start. Grandparents from Moray (north east Scotland) and I have been told I have Scandinavian physical traits. Definitely having Viking feels
reply

Rollo the Walker was one of my Ancestors and there was no obscure background he was the Brother of Ragnar Lothbrook and that is not Obscure. And I'm also related to Charlemagne by Blood.
reply

Intriguing information about his size. Like the skeleton found to be associated with Ivar, maybe his bloodline was some of the last giants to walk this earth.
reply

Charles the simple made a fool of himself when the giant man flipped him over and then let go, that is the price of giving your land away instead of defending it
reply

I found out recently that my great, great grandmother's maiden name was Weaver. it's a name from Normandy with ties to craftsmen and garment makers of old.
reply

Rollo was so tall he was known as Gange Rolf. because when he sat on a horse his feet touched the ground and in effect was walking when seated.

I nterestingly, the periods of the fall of rome to tribes from the north and of the viking raids follow a warm period in northern europe.
